We are here to help you make your vehicle perfect.Changing the engine oil and filter on your motorcycle is one of the most important maintenance tasks to keep your engine healthy. Doing it yourself not only ensures the job is done right but also saves money. The entire process takes only 20 to 30 minutes and requires minimal tools and supplies. If you have assembled your TSM tool kit, you should have everything you need. Otherwise, you’ll need a drain pan, nitrile gloves, a rag, a wrench for the drain plug, a torque wrench for reinstallation, an oil filter wrench, and any tools required to remove your bike’s fairing if necessary. Additionally, you’ll need a new filter, the correct oil as specified in your manual, and a replacement sealing washer for the drain bolt.

Preparing Your Motorcycle

If your bike has been running recently, allow it to cool down so you don’t handle boiling oil. If your bike has a center stand or if you have a rear stand or front wheel chock, these will help access the underside of your bike, though they are not strictly necessary. What is essential is a ground cover to prevent oil drips from staining your garage or driveway. I usually place some cardboard under the bike.

Draining the Old Oil

With your tools and bike in position, use a rag to clean dirt from around the drain plug and oil filter. Loosen the drain plug with an appropriate wrench or socket. Once you break the initial tension on the bolt, you should be able to unscrew it by hand. You’ll know it’s about to come free when you see oil beginning to seep past the threads.

Make sure the drain pan is under the motorcycle and that the vent on the pan is open so the oil drains smoothly without bubbling or splattering. Position your hand and arm to avoid getting splashed by the oil. Keep a rag handy to wipe off any oil from your arm.

Replacing the Oil Filter

Once the old oil has drained, it’s time to replace the oil filter. Some motorcycles, like many KTM and Honda dual-sport bikes, have internal cartridge filters, while most street bikes use an automotive-style spin-on filter. For cartridge filters, ensure you don’t install the new filter backwards. Consider taking a photo of the old filter before removing it as a reference.

For spin-on filters, use a universal strap wrench, filter pliers, or a filter socket. With the filter removed, pour out the oil and let it drain into the pan. Clean the filter mating surface with a clean rag, ensuring the old filter’s O-ring hasn’t stuck to the engine.

Installing the New Oil Filter and Plug

Your bike’s drain plug likely uses a sealing washer made of copper, aluminum, fiber, or an O-ring. It’s always best to replace the sealing washer or O-ring, but if the washer isn’t damaged, flipping it over can work. Ensure the washer is in place and start the drain plug by hand to avoid cross-threading, which is easy to do given the often awkward location of the bolt.

Torque the drain plug to the specification in your manual, typically between 14 to 16 foot-pounds. Always use a torque wrench to avoid over-tightening, which can damage the engine’s threads.

Refilling with New Oil

One common mistake is forgetting to refill the oil after draining it. Your manual will specify the type and amount of oil needed and whether to check the oil level with the bike on its side stand or held upright. After refilling, start the motorcycle and let it run for a minute. Then, turn it off and recheck the oil level, as it usually drops a bit after filling the new filter. Check for leaks around the filter and drain plug.

If necessary, top off the oil and, if everything looks good, you’re done. To feel even better, call your local dealership and ask for a quote on this service. You’ll realize the time and money you’ve saved. Now you know how to change your oil like a pro.
