Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m thinking of getting a dog but can’t decide between a Yorkie or a pitbull”?

It never happens, right? Yet some of us face similar dilemmas in the motorcycle world. On the surface, we seem to swing between two motorcycles that are not at all alike. I know because I’ve just been through it myself.

When you look beneath the surface, however, I think it all makes much more sense, and it boils down to whether you’re choosing a bike primarily based on form or function.

Form vs. function: which comes first for you?

In the American motorcycle market, many people choose a bike primarily based on looks. Many of us fall in love at first sight with a certain bike, and that ends the decision-making process (assuming there are sufficient funds) because nothing else will do, whether that particular machine is a Harley-Davidson Low Rider, a Ducati Panigale V4, or a Honda monkey. Few American riders see their motorcycles as utilitarian means of transportation, but many see them as an expression of personal style, so no matter how well a motorcycle may perform, if it looks “wrong,” it’s not a starting point.

The process is different for those of us who still care about looks but prioritize function. In Patrick’s case, this leads to a comparison between a Husqvarna Svartpilen 701 and an Indian FTR1200. In my case, at one point I was looking at both a used Honda VFR800 Interceptor Deluxe and a Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe.

Now you’d expect to see a comparison between a Yamaha YZF-R6 and a Suzuki GSX-R600 or a Harley-Davidson Ultra Limited and an Indian Roadmaster, but a Husky thumper and an Indian road twin? Well, Patrick wrote a comparison between those two seemingly different bikes because he was literally trying to choose between them on his own.

Twin vs. single, 123 horsepower vs. 75 horsepower, 508 pounds vs. 347 pounds, not to mention the different styles: at first glance, it may seem like a strange choice. But it all makes sense when Patrick explains the purpose of his purchase. He wanted a fun, hooligan street bike that could still handle the dirt roads so common near his home in Sturgis, South Dakota. Two different bikes, yes, but both capable of fulfilling the function Patrick wanted, just with different strengths and weaknesses.

My search for the right sport-tourer

I found myself in a similar situation during the winter. For years, my Kawasaki Versys 650, equipped with Givi side bags, heated grips, and handguards, was the bike I relied on for trips, whether it was a 500-mile journey from home to work or a winter escape south or summer adventures. But after selling the Versys, I was left with bikes that were, respectively, too old, too slow, and too uncomfortable to be optimal for traveling. I needed something practical, but I didn’t want a heavy touring bike, and while everyone around me suggested a street-style ADV bike like a Yamaha Tracer GT, the upright position is a bit too much for me. This was one of my minor gripes with the Versys I owned and the much larger Versys 1000 SE LT+ that I extensively tested.

That’s how I found myself in the dead of winter wavering between a used Honda VFR800 Interceptor Deluxe and a heavily discounted Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe. Retro vs. subtly modern, green vs. red, they seem very different at first glance. But I knew that both could satisfy my need to rack up miles on a bike that would still be fun to ride when the road got twisty. I could do that by hunting down a set of well-integrated (but discontinued) side bags from Honda for the Interceptor or by piecing apart the Cafe much like I had done with the Versys.

Honestly, the more rational choice would have been to split the difference and get one of the many previous-generation Kawasaki Ninja 1000s available, and if I had found one with hard bags a bit closer to home, I probably would have. But both the Interceptor’s lines, from its LED headlights to integrated rear turn signals, and the more essential yet not entirely naked look of the Cafe appealed to me more. So yes, form played a role in the final choice, but it was primarily function that narrowed those choices down.

So, in the end, Patrick went with the Husky, and I bought a used Interceptor and tracked down a new set of side bags from a seller on eBay, then fitted them to my liking. He’s enjoying the dirt roads on his new Euro-thumper, and I, well, I bought a touring bike in February, just days before a national emergency was declared and traveling suddenly became more complicated and less appealing. Great timing on my part. So far, the VFR has taken one trip, to Road America for the first round of MotoAmerica races. I have a feeling it won’t rack up miles as quickly as its predecessor did.

Customers have the right to return merchandise within 14 days from the date of receipt. For chip tuning purchases, the return period is extended to 30 days.

Products must be returned in saleable condition. Products damaged with liquids inside or exhaust gases cannot be returned. Used merchandise cannot be returned unless expressly indicated by the seller.

Once we receive and inspect the merchandise, the refund will be processed using the payment method used by the customer within 5 business days from the date of receipt. This time allows us to inspect the merchandise and restock it.
