ENGINES FOR COMBUSTION
The mixture of air and gasoline ignites through the spark plug’s spark, igniting the combustion engines. In theory, the moment to produce the spark of the spark plug is when the piston is completely raised (all the way up). The spark is thus produced at the point of greatest compression of the mixture.
In practice, however, this is not the case. Fuel does not completely ignite right away. That is why the “ignition advance” exists.
THE ISSUE WITH THE THEORY
As we have seen, the theoretical cycle of engine operation has a significant problem. The issue is that it does not account for the time it takes for the gasoline-air mixture to burn. This time is approximately 2 milliseconds. It may appear to be a minor event, but consider the speeds at which the engines, and thus the combustion chamber, are moving.
Let’s look at speeds and times in more detail. When the engine is running at 2,000 RPM, the piston will move up and down 33 times per second. As a result, the crankshaft will complete one revolution in approximately 30 thousandths of a second. This means that the piston will move in 15 thousandths of a second.
Now consider how much these times are reduced if the engine is cranked up to 4,000, 6,000, or even higher revs.
Now, if we want to make good use of the impulse provided by each of the explosions produced by combustion, it is critical to consider the 2 thousandths that the fuel takes to burn. This is why ignition advance is critical.
This method is used to ignite the mixture while the piston is still rising.
THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE IGNITION IN DEGREES
The ignition advance of an engine is not measured in milliseconds. It is measured in degrees to ensure proper calibration. In degrees of crankshaft rotation, to be precise. Remember that when the piston explodes, the crankshaft rotates 180°.
The ideal time for the fuel-air mixture to finish burning is between 17 and 23 degrees of rotation. To make it on time, we must advance the ignition a few degrees before the piston reaches Top Dead Center. In other words, before the crankshaft reaches zero degrees of rotation.
to take into consideration
It’s critical not to overdo it, because if we do it too soon, the explosion will push the piston before it reaches Top Dead Center, causing the engine to turn the opposite way. This is the well-known “crank pit,” which makes those distinctive metallic sounds. This is a very negative effect that causes imbalances and vibrations that are extremely harmful to internal parts. In the worst-case scenario, the piston may fall. This is unlikely in multi-cylinder engines due to the inertia they carry, but it can cause severe damage in one or two.
FUELS TYPES
The type of fuel you use influences how far you can advance the ignition (and get more power). 98 octane fuels, for example, are less likely to burn and thus less likely to self-detonate. That is, a greater ignition advance can be used without causing the fuel to explode before Top Dead Center (TDC).
“Whoever invented it is a genius. The alternatives on the market were too general, those who studied it knew what one needs to work. “
