Various technologies have been developed to reduce these emissions and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system is one of them. SCR is based on the removal or reduction of NOx emissions in the engine as a result of the combustion of fuel and air, which is managed for AdBlue or DEEF (Diesel Engine Exhaust Fluid) solution. Indeed, SCR is the name of this technology and AdBlue is the catalytic solution of the reaction. What is ADBLUE and how does it work on DAF XF Euro6 Series ?

On most cars manufactured after 2015, AdBlue is built with the aim of exceeding the Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards and significantly reduce the amounts of NOx.
ADBLUE or (DEEF) is a colorless, odorless and clear solution that is highly soluble in water and lasts up to 18 months when stored under optimal conditions, including a dry place and a cool temperature. For the production of ADBLUE, ammonia and carbon dioxide are exposed to the heat of the urea.
This solution contains 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionized water. The freezing temperature of ADBLUE is -11 degrees, but to avoid freezing below -11 degrees, there is a ceramic heater in its tank which is heated when the engine is started, preventing the solution from freezing.
Cars equipped with EGR don’t need to use AdBlue, but if a car doesn’t have EGR, it needs AdBlue to help the NOx breakdown process.
AdBlue has a separate tank in most cars which is usually located next to the fuel tank or under the spare wheels. Note that the AdBlue liquid must be stored in special containers built with a special technology. In fact, AdBlue cannot and must not be kept in any container.

How does AdBlue reduce emissions for DAF XF Euro6 Series ?

In the high temperature of the exhaust, the concentration of NOx is higher than the amount that the catalyst can decompose into nitrogen and water, and this is where AdBlue comes in handy. The amount of AdBlue spraying depends on the amount of combustion-induced NOx emissions, which are determined by the NOx sensors incorporated before and after the catalyst, as well as the vehicle operating conditions, such as engine speed, gas pollution levels discharge and the operating temperature level.
Normally, the capacity of the AdBlue tank is between 10 and 25 liters and its consumption varies from around 2% to 6% of the volume of petrol consumption, according to the explanations above. In other words, each gallon of AdBlue is enough for approximately 2-3,000 miles. The cost per liter of AdBlue is between £1 and £1.5, depending on whether you buy it from petrol stations or from garages.
