When you bring your motorcycle to a mechanic, you’re seeking help. You want your bike to run smoothly so you can get to work, attend classes, or, better yet, enjoy a Sunday morning ride with friends. And as your mechanic, I might need a little help from you if your bike’s problem isn’t as obvious as a flat tire or a worn sprocket. This help comes in the form of information that will guide me towards a diagnosis, so I can fix your bike and get you back on the road.
Information is particularly crucial when I don’t have direct access to the machine, such as when I respond to pleas sent through social media. In such a scenario, a vague problem like “My bike runs poorly and doesn’t want to rev up” is challenging to address because I lack evidence to work with, and I’m not keen on composing a troubleshooting guide on my smartphone.
If you’re the rider whose bike isn’t idling well, I’ll likely groan audibly, take a deep breath, and then start asking questions.
What do you mean by running poorly? Is it a low idle, a high idle, or hesitates when you open the throttle? Is your bike carbureted or fuel-injected? Have you made any changes to the bike? How many miles are on it? When was it last serviced or worked on? How long has this problem been going on?

Verbal Investigations for Clues

These questions and others like them are verbal probes, methods to build a mental picture of information where I’ll look for correlations. It’s what all mechanics do. Perhaps the owner just installed a high-flow air filter and exhaust, revealing an obvious cause-effect relationship to explore. Or it might be revealed that it has been raining for weeks, and the bike is parked outside, in which case water in the fuel system or soggy electrical connections are likely culprits.
It’s all just investigative work, and you, as the key witness to the problem, even if you don’t fully understand what it might be, have more clues.
So, the best way to help your mechanic help you is to reflect on the problem, identify as many symptoms as possible, and offer as much basic information as you can. To that end, there are three categories I recommend considering as you gather evidence: sensation, noise, and scenario.

Tune into Sensations

When it comes to sensations, you have many options to feel your motorcycle. Your hands are on the grips, your seat on the saddle, and your feet on the pegs. There are tens of thousands of nerve endings to detect rattles, shimmies, thumps, shakes, or other sensations that could be helpful to your mechanic. Faulty bearings, a loose timing chain, worn head bearings, warped clutch discs, glazed brake discs, unbalanced wheels, and a myriad of other ailments, all revealing sensations for the attentive rider.
Besides tuning into any unusual sensations, we advise noting where they seem to be coming from. The same goes for sounds.

Mimic the Sounds

Is the bike making unusual noises? If so, from where? Don’t be afraid to mimic the noise your bike makes when it’s struggling, even if it’s the hoot of an owl from a slipping alternator belt on your BMW R 1150 R. Chances are your interpretation will make both of you laugh, and perhaps even provide a valuable clue.

Describe the Scenario

Finally, the scenario surrounding the problem can be revealing, so delve into your memory for the situation where the problem occurs. What happens just before or after the problem? Is it associated with specific inputs or control actions, like making a turn or hitting a bump? What was the weather like, and is the engine cold or hot? Have you just spent a long time on the highway? Does it happen during acceleration or deceleration? At a certain engine or road speed? Things that may seem entirely insignificant or irrelevant to you could light a bulb in your mechanic’s head, so don’t hold back.
Motorcycles aren’t mysterious machines, and mechanics aren’t magicians. We’re simple folks with a talent for logical thinking, if-A-then-B, and we need information for our mental flowcharts. Providing clues will help us fix your bike faster, save you money, and make you think like a mechanic, which might help you solve the next problem on your own.
