My first attempt was a naked Ducati Multistrada, also known as a Multimonster or a Monsterstrada. Done on the smallest possible budget and in the shortest amount of time possible, it cost me thousands of dollars, took months, and was incomplete when I sold it. But I have no regrets.
Note: These are my summarised notes and photos. I attempted to document as much as possible, but I did not record everything (also, some of it is boring). If you have any questions, please contact me.
If you’re looking at this and don’t already own a Multistrada, you should probably get a Ducati Monster… Here’s my advice on which Monster to purchase.
In 2016, I purchased my first long-distance motorcycle, a Ducati Multistrada 1000DS. It had 18,000 miles on it and was a 2003 model.
I bought it because I wanted to take a 1,000-mile motorcycle trip from San Francisco to Arizona, which I never did (thought I did ride from San Francisco to LA).
I had three options for the long-distance trip: a Ducati Multistrada 1000DS, a BMW R1200GS, or a Triumph Sprint ST 1050. I had no idea about the (now obvious) differences between the three! All I knew was that this Multistrada was available from a local mechanic for US$3,995, so after a couple of afternoons of deliberation, it was mine.
The issue was that I never truly fell in love with the Multistrada. I grew to like it, but not fall in love with it. After a few trips, I decided to change it, and thus my quest to build a naked Ducati Multistrada began.
Disclaimer: This is not a work of art. Even though I didn’t make it to the finish line, I’m proud of myself because it was far more difficult than I anticipated and I persevered through several phases of regret. If you want to do this conversion, you’ll have to do these things at the very least, but probably more cleanly and definitely more.
Everything I Found Out About Stripping a Faired Motorcycle Naked
This is a quick rundown of everything I learned while working on this project. If you want the gory details, read the entire article.
First, here are the lessons I learned:
Never, ever, ever strip a motorcycle with intact fairings (unless they go back easily). You’re removing thousands of dollars in value. If you decide to sell it, they are unlikely to return immediately. Only do this with broken fairing motorcycles, preferably ones with salvage titles that you bought for a song.
If you’ve never done anything like it, every project is about 5 times as difficult as you think. Unexpected difficulties arise, such as removing the tank, replacing a headlight, cleaning up wires, or replacing a catalytic converter.
Don’t underestimate the amount of cleaning that needs to be done beneath the fairings. Wires are all over the place. Grease splatters The paint has most likely worn away. Things like regulator/rectifiers, batteries, and other components are unexpectedly bolted to fairings. Also, don’t assume everything is fine down there…
Be prepared to create custom light components. For example, you may need to make custom mounts for oil coolers, the battery, the dash display, and other components. You should not begin if you lack the necessary metal, clamps, drills, and other tools for light sheet metal fabrication.
You might never trust something you worked on in the same way again. I knew how many wires were exposed and what was likely to be stressed, but I lacked the wherewithal (or patience) to resolve everything. I became concerned about riding in the rain. Nobody should be feeling this way!
However, it is not all bad news. Here are some of the positive things I discovered while building my naked Multistrada.
After your first build, you’re a “builder.” You’re a “builder” once you’ve built your first motorcycle and people know about it. You have a greater right to an opinion. They’ll be well-informed!
Small first steps lead to confidence. My second project was to restore a written-off Triumph Scrambler (coming soon!) and sell it for a profit.
Working on motorcycles is a fun way to pass the time on a rainy day. You are unable to ride. It’s time to get personal.
Most of the world experiences rain or bad weather at some point during the year (except for SoCal… and Perth). Or, on rare occasions, lockdowns due to pandemics. It’s a great time to build a motorcycle!
The total cost of constructing a Naked Ducati Multistrada is
My main and necessary expenses were the parts. The following is what I paid to have them shipped to me. This all came to $585, or $385 if you exclude the workshop time.
$150 for a headlight and turn signals
Ducati 1000Ds were used. K&N oil cooler + mount: $120 $75 for air pod filters
$50 for a crank case breather
$200 for workshop time (not necessary if you have your own space)
Some optional items that I did not have to purchase
Mirrors (I didn’t like the ones at the bar): $50
$310 for an Arrow racing collector
$175 for a silent clutch cover (ended up selling this separately)
The finished Naked Ducati Multistrada: The MonsterStrada/Multimonster
A naked Ducati Multistrada, also known as a MonsterStrada/MultiMonster, on a California highway.
This is the naked Ducati Multistrada, which is still not finished but looks good.
The final naked Monster-like product felt noticeably different from the original Ducati Multistrada.
For starters, it felt lighter. It might not have been much lighter. But the fact that it wasn’t as bulky in the front made me feel more in control.
Second, it had the appearance of a “supermoto/supermotard/hypermotard” motorcycle. In appearance, it’s similar to a Hyperstrada, with tall, wide handlebars and a similar displacement v-twin. It’s not one — it’s too heavy, and the wheels (which are 17 inches in diameter) are too large. I was always aware of how high I was. But now, perched on the handlebars, I felt like I was on a completely different motorcycle than before.
Other modifications I made along the way, such as straight-through exhaust headers and a naked clutch cover (which I later replaced with a billet aluminum sound-deadening clutch cover), also made it sound very different.
The exhaust never sounded particularly good. It sounded like… a lawnmower, even with Remus pipes and custom headers. Disappointing.
But it still looked the part!

Ducati Multistrada 1000DS Specifications
Ducati Multistrada 1000DS original 2003 with all fairings
The Multistrada 1000DS in all of its original, faired glory.
In short, the Ducati Multistrada 1000DS divided people into two camps: those who liked it despite its looks, and those who “actually” liked it because of its looks.
The Ducati Multistrada 1000DS is an upright sports-touring motorcycle, or what we now call a “adventure sports” motorcycle (in 2021). It was, however, quite unique in its class in 2003.
It is powered by an air-cooled 992cc v-twin motor that produces 68kW (92hp) of power and 87 Nm (65 ft-lbs) of torque.
It’s quick. You should ride it at 120-140km/h (70-90 mph). You can ride it up to around 160km/h (100 mph) before the acceleration slows; I’ve had it up to 200km/h, but didn’t enjoy it at that speed on public roads.
Motorcycles with 75 kW/100 hp or more are my favorite. It just feels right for public roads to me. I didn’t realize this when I bought the multi, but it was something I discovered much later.
The Multistrada 1000DS has a single-sided swing-arm, a dry clutch, a burbling under-seat exhaust, upside-down fully adjustable forks (with optional hlins from 2005), and strong brakes gripping huge 320mm front discs.
It weighs a relatively light 188kg dry (probably 210kg wet), has good ground clearance, and large, wide handlebars, making long-distance riding a joy.
The Ducati Multistrada 1000DS is NOT a dirt bike. The front rake is quite narrow, the 17-inch tires are usually inappropriate, and the engine is unprotected. The ground clearance is adequate, but the travel is not comparable to that of a CRF250L.
Why strip the Ducati Multistrada naked (rather than purchasing a Ducati Monster)?
There are several other ways to phrase this question.
Why remove perfectly good fairings from a motorcycle? (Yes, this was a typo.)
Why not sell it and get a Monster? (I should have done this instead of starting a new project.)
Why sabotage the Multistrada?
The Multistrada 1000DS is arguably Ducati’s ugliest motorcycle ever. This isn’t much of a compliment, given that it shares a stable with incredibly beautiful beasts like the one below.
The 2018 Panigale V4 is one of the most beautiful Ducati motorcycles.
The Ducati Panigale V4 is one of the most beautiful motorcycles on the market right now. Oh no, the Multistrada is more ugly than this? What could be uglier than a Panigale?
This isn’t just my personal opinion. Others think the Ducati Multistrada 1000DS is unattractive as well.
“It’s kind of ugly all around.” – RideAway
“Forgive Ducati’s design department for the lobotomy that is the Ducati Multistrada from 2003 on.” No other single-headlamp bike has come close to resembling Cyclops.” – http://www.bikerandbike.co.uk/
“From the front, it appears to have fallen out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, but don’t let that deter you from what is otherwise an excellent bike.” – The Bennetts
Many people, like the previous one, were quick to qualify their opinion.
“To call it ugly is a gross understatement. It’s the same as saying an A-10 Warthog or an AH-64 Apache helicopter is unattractive. They’re ugly, but they’re not without beauty.” – CanyonRunners
“The two main aesthetic camps continue to rally around the banners “ugly” and “OK.” Which contradicts a poll of anyone lucky enough to have ridden one.” – Telegraphic transmission
So it’s not all bad. What is there to like about them? A lot.
The suspension is excellent. If “hlins” on the S models didn’t completely sell you, totally adjustable front AND rear suspension would. The suspension on the base model is adequate (I have no complaints).
The engine is dubbed “bulletproof.” I realize this is purely anecdotal. It essentially means that they don’t have a reputation for being total jerks. Having said that, they’re still an air-cooled Ducati, so 6,000 mile or 10,000 km valve inspections and/or belt changes are standard.
They’ve got the single-sided swingarm and under-seat exhaust setup. Ducati Monsters never had an under-seat exhaust, and single-sided swingarms were only available on higher-end models.
That, and the Multistrada is very reasonably priced. As an ugly duckling, they are willing to pay a low price for bikes in good condition with low mileage. So it was very tempting to purchase one.
When I googled “Naked Ducati Multistrada 1000DS,” I started seeing pictures like the one below. It was time to get started once I had found a few.
My naked Ducati Multistrada build was inspired by this.
Another much cleaner job done on a 2005 model that served as inspiration for my Naked Multistrada.
Another stunning image of a naked Ducati Multistrada.
The second source of inspiration was a forum member named “loudbike.” I knew I’d never make it this far.
Major steps for nakeding the Ducati Multistrada
Here’s a rundown of everything I had to do to get to the naked Ducati Multistrada. More information is provided below.
Remove the fairings, including the seat, if necessary (this alone nearly did my head in)
Move the battery and computer from the outside of the frame into the airbox, rearranging wiring and cutting into the airbox.
Get pod filters (to make more room in the airbox) and cut large holes in the airbox to fit the battery and computer.
Install a crankcase breather filter to eliminate the airbox hose.
Change the front headlight.
Get a new oil cooler mount, the easiest way being to use a valve cover from a Monster 1000.
Remove the catalytic converter and replace the exhaust headers.
Things I should have done but didn’t
Purchase a more appropriate (and almost certainly custom) fuel tank. This was important for aesthetic reasons. The tank appears to require additional modifications. I didn’t because finding a suitable replacement (this one has an internal fuel pump) would be prohibitively expensive short of a custom job.
Make a better front instrument dash mount. This would have been simple if I had the necessary tools and space.
Make a smaller seat by cutting the tail end short.
Look for smaller handlebars or clip-ons.
Replace or chop the front fender
Improve your taillights and possibly your exhaust system.
Remove all heavy items, such as the center stand and rear-sets.
Major steps in stripping the naked Multistrada (in more detail)
Here are many more detailed steps for removing plastics and relocating items to get to the naked Ducati Multistrada level.
Take off the fairings.
Fairing removed from a Multistrada 1000DS
The Multistrada 1000DS without the fairing
This wasn’t so difficult; you can do it yourself. You take out every screw until there are none left. To the chagrin of my neighbors, I did it in a car space in San Francisco (who complained about things at the drop of a hat).
The battery is now exposed, as seen in the photo. A fuse box and fuel injection are located nearby.
The oil cooler is attached to the same mount that holds the front light fitting and fairing on the front.
Place the electronics inside the airbox.
Ducati Multistrada airbox with electronics installed
The Ducati Multistrada’s airbox with the computer and wiring stuffed inside.
I attempted to hide the battery beneath the seat. I even used heavy duty cable purchased on eBay to extend the battery cable. However, for reasons I can’t recall, it didn’t fit properly under there. So I stuffed it into the battery box, alongside the fuse box and the computer.
One thing I discovered after a lot of googling: you must earth the computer with a wire or the motorcycle will not start. When it’s mounted there, it’s earthed to the chassis (in its original location).
As seen, I also installed pod K&N filters to make room for the electronics and battery.
Change the front headlight.
After you remove the front fairing, you’ll need a new headlamp and the wiring to connect it to the giant connector you unplugged.
The Ducati Multistrada 1000DS now has a new front headlight.
The Ducati Multistrada 1000DS now has a new front headlight.
These headlamps have built-in turn signals and clamp directly to the forks. The proper size is 53mm.
I almost bought the incorrect size. Brian from SpeedMotoCo came through for me and corrected my order, so I’m happy to recommend him — he saved us both time and money. Furthermore, the entire assembly was only $160, which is a steal when compared to most aftermarket parts.
Get a new oil cooler mount for your Ducati Multistrada 1000DS oil cooler that is hanging off the oil lines.
The Multistrada Oil Cooler – awkwardly dangling from the oil lines
The original oil cooler is bolted to the front forks by a bracket that is also attached to the front headlight assembly (if I recall correctly).
When it comes to remounting the oil cooler, you have a few options:
Create a unique mount for it. If you know how, this is a fantastic idea!
Using steel cable ties, hang it awkwardly from the frame… I tried it for a couple of rides but would not recommend it…
Obtain a mount from another Ducati with a comparable valve cover naked multistrada. – Using cable ties to secure the oil cooler
The cable ties are still in place. At this point, I contacted a local Ducati wrecker near San Francisco, who sent me an oil cooler as well as the mount (onto the front valve cover) from a Monster 1000DS engine with a very similar engine. It fit almost perfectly. Because my current oil cooler was a different size, I had to re-use it, and it fit onto that mount with a few washers.
Change the exhaust headers.
In comparison to my Monster 900, Supersports, and even Ducati Monster 696s, I always thought the Multi sounded a little like a lawnmower. Granted, those had Termignoni exhausts, but that’s what I assumed was the issue.
My Multistrada, like many others, came with Remus pipes. You can remove the catalytic converter by replacing the downpipes.
I found some Arrow pipes for $300 on the internet. Unfortunately, these are no longer manufactured, so you’ll have to source them from a wrecker.
Reflections — Would I do it again? And how so?
Congratulations on making it this far!
I just wanted to say that, while I have no regrets because of everything I learned, I wouldn’t do this naked Multistrada build again. This is why.
I’ve learned to appreciate a well-maintained motorcycle, particularly a Ducati. When I see original condition Multistradas, I think, “Wow, that’s not a bad looking motorcycle!” However, the owner has kept it in excellent condition; congratulations.”
All of my adventures and memories involved the original bike. I miss them!
There’s something to be said for riding a “ugly duckling” and riding the snot out of it, exceeding anyone’s expectations.
If I were to do this project again, it would be on a motorcycle that had been in a crash and had irreparably damaged fairings (which I couldn’t even plastic weld back together). Or on a motorcycle that was so old that it had little value and deserved to be completely disassembled.
People assumed it was salvage title or had been crashed when I was selling it (as I was leaving the country). When I said it wasn’t, they thought I was lying.
In the end, I paid around $4K for this motorcycle, spent about $1-1.5K on parts, and sold it for $2,500. It’s one of the biggest (and only) motorcycle losses I’ve ever had. It’s a lot of money to pay for a college education!
I gave the fairings to a friendly guy from a San Francisco dealer who had always been nice to me. He was riding a 1000DS in its original condition. I should have learned from him.
All of these are things I learned and will apply to my next project!
Obviously, there are many unanswered questions. Please contact me if you have any.
