Hello, and Welcome to Racext’s Moto Magazine column, the column aimed exclusively at the world of 2-wheeled vehicles with news, insights and guides, available every day here ru racext.com, today in this article we will talk about “How to change gear on a motorcycle”
How to change gear on a motorcycle
In the world of four wheels, automatic transmissions are the norm.
When it comes to the world of two-wheeled motorcycles, however, shifting gears is usually up to you. (Unless you’re on a scooter, electric motorcycle, or one of the many DCT-equipped Honda models.)
And while shifting can be a hindrance for new riders, getting it right only requires some coordination between the clutch hand and shift foot on the left and the throttle hand on the right.
This article aims to provide information for various levels of rider, from absolute beginners to more experienced riders who wish to learn advanced “clutchless” techniques. So browse through the subtitles until you see something you like, then dive in.
The basics: how to change gear on a motorcycle
If you are a completely new cyclist, here are the basic actions of the correct shifting technique.
From one stop
- With the engine running and the throttle closed, pull the clutch all the way in with your left hand.
- Shift into first gear with your left foot. You should hear and feel the transmission snap into gear.
- Slowly release the clutch with your left hand while simultaneously (but gently) opening the throttle with your right hand until the motorcycle begins to roll forward.
- As you continue to open the throttle with your right hand and the bike picks up speed, gradually and completely release the clutch with your left hand. Are you coming!
Upshifting while moving
- Pull the throttle closed with your right hand.
- Pull the clutch lever with your left hand.
- Shift to the next higher gear with your left foot. As before, you should hear the transmission snap into gear. If you release the clutch and the bike doesn’t move, you are in neutral between first and second gear. Pull the clutch and shift gears again.
- Slowly release the clutch with your left hand as you re-open the throttle with your right hand.
Downshift while moving
- Pull the throttle closed with your right hand.
- Pull the clutch lever with your left hand.
- Shift to the next lower gear with your left foot.
- Slowly release the clutch lever with your left hand. If you are going down a hill or to allow for faster acceleration, open the throttle as you release the clutch. However, if you are downshifting in preparation for stopping, you just need to add enough throttle to match engine rpm to your road speed so the bike slows down smoothly.
Coordinating these actions will require deliberate reflection at first and may seem a little clunky, and cyclists are often too zealous with their movements. Remember that throttle control comes only from the wrist (and not the entire arm) and that shifting actions should be performed with a quick, deliberate push from the foot.
Rest assured that with practice all these movements will become more fluid, and over time the movement will become so natural that you won’t even think about it.

Refine your understanding and technique
If those shifting CliffsNotes weren’t enough for you, let’s dive a little deeper and understand better the mechanics of shifting so you can do it more efficiently.
To push a motorcycle down the road, power is fed from the crankshaft to the transmission, then to the final drive (which can be a chain and sprockets, belt and pulleys or shaft) and finally to the rear wheel. Between the crankshaft and the transmission is the clutch, which acts as a progressive coupling device between the two.
When we talk about gear shifting, the term is appropriate, because we change the pair of gears through which the power flows. When the motorcycle is accelerating on the throttle or decelerating due to the engine brake, there is a load on the shift faces. This load must be relieved for the gears to change position.
This is where the clutch comes in. By pulling the clutch lever, you disengage the crankshaft from the transmission, thereby relieving the transmission so that the gears can move to the next position. The crankshaft and transmission are fully engaged when the clutch lever is out and progress to fully disengage when the lever is pulled all the way.
You will have to fully disengage the clutch to shift from neutral or to stop while in first gear, but once you are rolling you can actually shift gears without pulling the clutch lever all the way down.
“Fan” the clutch is a term we use to describe quickly and partially pulling the lever to momentarily unload the transmission so you can shift up or down. This is an important technique, as it allows for faster and smoother shifting.
And, apparently, there’s a way to shift even faster, without using the clutch at all.
& nbsp;
Gearbox without clutch
You know how we said that the clutch acts to disengage the crankshaft from the transmission to unload the gears and allow them to change positions? Well, the same exhaust effect can be achieved by swiping the gas quickly and briefly and then turning it back on.
In that instant right after you hit the throttle, the transmission is unloaded. If you synchronize your gear shift to coincide with that momentary transmission drain, the bike can be downshifted to the next gear. No friction required.
To get an idea of the timing of things, it can be useful to gently preload the gearbox with the tip of your foot. This way, as soon as the accelerator is operated, the shift lever is raised and the gears shift. Over time, you will be able to coordinate throttle and shift movements to perform smooth gear changes without the clutch. It is the fastest way to upshift, both in terms of shifting gears and in terms of road speed.
There’s also clutchless downshifting, but it requires even more precision and finesse and offers no real performance advantage. It’s fun though, and it’s a good skill to know in case you break your clutch lever or clutch cable on a ride.
To downshift without clutch, you’ll need to use a technique called throttle blipping, which is when you decelerate with the throttle closed, but very quickly open the throttle partially to unload the transmission and allow for a gear shift. As with clutchless gear shifts, you’re timing your shift with that momentary window when the revs peak and transmission is low.
Clutchless downshifting works best when you decelerate on the brakes as it helps match engine rpm to road speed. However, this means pressing the accelerator while pulling the front brake lever, which can be a difficult combination to master.
Also, part of the fun and satisfaction of riding a motorcycle is perfecting the many techniques needed to make it work. Hopefully after reading this article, you are better equipped to tackle the task of shifting gears on a motorcycle, regardless of your current skill level.
