Fortunately, it’s never too late to start, though figuring out where to begin can be challenging. When I first got into motocross, I was overwhelmed by the variety of gear and unsure about what to prioritize and why each piece was important.
Let’s break down the basics of essential motocross gear, starting with the most crucial piece of equipment: the helmet.
Helmet
A motocross helmet differs significantly from your standard street helmet. It features a peak visor on top to block roost, shield you from tree branches, and occasionally help with sun glare. A quick tip: look for helmets with plastic screws on the sides or an easy-release system for the peak visor. This is particularly useful if you do a lot of trail riding, as the visor can catch on low-hanging branches, potentially causing neck injuries. A detachable visor will simply snap off instead of pulling your head and neck.
Motocross helmets also provide excellent ventilation. Given the physical nature of motocross, with frequent body movement on the bike, you generate a lot of body heat, making airflow your best friend. But, protection remains the top priority. Riders encounter various surfaces and terrains that can lead to different impact types during a crash. The helmet’s job is to absorb and disperse the energy from these impacts.
Some helmets include technology to prevent rotational injuries. This feature allows some movement between the outer shell and inner liner, helping to reduce brain injuries from rotational forces during a crash.
Goggles
Your eyes are incredibly vulnerable, making goggles another critical piece of gear that should fit well with your helmet. If you can’t see, you can’t ride. Goggles protect your eyes from roost, tree branches, rain, and anything else that might damage them while riding. They come with various lens tints for sun protection and to enhance your trail vision.
When choosing goggles, look for stabilizers, which are plastic pieces on the frame that help position the goggles in the helmet for added comfort. A wide strap is also beneficial as it helps keep the goggles secure. A broad field of view is essential for spotting obstacles beside you on the trail or track. Goggles with roll-offs for muddy conditions, different foam types for dusty or sandy environments, and dual-pane lenses to reduce fogging are all available. While all modern goggles offer eye protection, some do it better than others.
Neck Braces
Neck braces are somewhat polarizing in the motocross community; riders either swear by them or find them uncomfortable and cumbersome. Designed to prevent neck and spinal injuries by reducing compression during a crash, neck braces help with hyperextension and lateral movements, primarily offering spinal compression protection.
Fitting a neck brace correctly is crucial; it should sit comfortably on your shoulders without restricting movement. Each manufacturer has specific sizing guidelines, so check product details and specifications to ensure a proper fit. Some manufacturers design neck braces to work seamlessly with their chest protectors.
Chest Protectors and Roost Guards
Chest protectors and roost guards share many similarities but also have some differences. Roost guards are lighter and typically used by motocross riders, offering basic chest and back coverage primarily against roost and debris from other riders. They are generally more low-profile than chest protectors.
Chest protectors, also known as body armor, provide more extensive coverage and are used by riders who encounter more obstacles like trees, rocks, roots, and logs. They often include adjustable armor for the biceps and forearms, along with rib protection. For accident-prone riders, this additional coverage is invaluable. If you plan to use a neck brace, some brands offer integrated designs for better compatibility and comfort.
Knee Guards vs. Knee Braces
Knee guards and knee braces may seem similar but offer different levels of protection and come at different price points. Knee guards primarily stay in place during a crash and provide impact protection. They feature a hard TPU shell and straps to ensure they stay secure. Even the cheapest knee guards are better than nothing.
Knee braces offer impact protection and go further by preventing torsional and lateral knee injuries and hyperextension. They include a pivot point and sturdy spine along both sides of the knee for added stability. Each manufacturer sizes differently, so check their size chart to ensure a proper fit. Many knee braces include numbered straps for secure fastening in a specific order.
MX Boots
Motocross boots are among the most protective footwear available to riders. They are crucial because motocross riders constantly use their legs and feet, which are exposed to many potential hazards. The stiffness of MX boots helps prevent torsional and lateral injuries. Designed to accommodate knee guards and braces, these boots offer added protection with rigid TPU around the shin and foot.
Different brands offer various price points within their product lines. For instance, Alpinestars’ Tech 3 boots are entry-level, while Tech 7 boots provide additional straps and a dual-pivot system for more flexibility and comfort. Proper sizing is similar to everyday shoe sizing, but refer to the manufacturer’s size chart for any specific fit notes.
Jerseys, Pants, and Gloves
Choosing your jersey, pants, and gloves often comes down to personal style and preference, but there are some practical considerations. Different brands offer gear tailored to specific types of riders or disciplines. For example, Fly Racing’s F-16 gear is great for beginners due to its comfort, durability, and breathability at an affordable price. Their Evolution DST gear is more durable and flexible, offering better comfort for trail riders. The Lite gear focuses on performance, favored by professional motocross and Supercross riders for its lightweight, flexibility, and comfort.
When selecting gear, keep in mind that lighter, more flexible materials may sacrifice some durability, so choose based on your riding style and environment.
By understanding the purpose and benefits of each piece of motocross gear, you can make informed decisions to enhance your safety and riding experience.
