After middle school he began working as an apprentice boy at the “Bariola” workshop in Via Cristoforo Colombo. At 18 he volunteered for military service, enlisting in the air force. Appointed engineer sergeant at the 50th Stormo Aereo Siluranti, he took part in the war in Spain and Africa. Taken prisoner, he was deported to Germany. He returns to Piacenza in 1945, where he opens a mechanical workshop in via Alberoni. A keen sportsman, he elaborates and coaches a Fiat Topolino to participate in the 1947 Mille Miglia, a race which he then runs together with Pesci. Of course, it is also present at the first edition of the Piacenza Circuit. The following year he returned to the Brescia race with Musa. In 1949 he is still present, this time with Guarnaschelli. He doesn’t win, but he participates, and this is enough for him. At the end of his career as a builder, however, he will be able to boast of having built, all by himself, no less than six cars (two berlinettas and four barchette), all derived from the Fiat 500. At the beginning of the 1950s he was called to work at the Astra as test driver.

But he is the independent type and prefers to go back to being on his own. He opens a new workshop in via Roma and takes it up again

as a mechanic and coachbuilder. Enrico Maestri’s reputation continued to grow, and he became known for his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.

In the early 1950s, Maestri received an invitation to work as a test driver at Astra, a renowned automotive company. This was a significant opportunity for him, as Astra was known for its innovative designs and advanced engineering. However, despite the allure of a stable job and the chance to work with cutting-edge technology, Maestri decided to follow his independent spirit and continue his work at his own workshop.

With his new workshop on Via Roma, Enrico Maestri began to attract attention from car enthusiasts and racing enthusiasts alike. His reputation as a skilled mechanic and coachbuilder grew, and soon he was commissioned to work on various high-profile projects. One notable project was the customization of a Fiat 500 for a wealthy industrialist who wanted a unique and personalized vehicle. Maestri’s craftsmanship and attention to detail impressed the client, and his work received accolades in automotive circles.

As the years went by, Enrico Maestri’s passion for racing remained undiminished. He continued to participate in various local racing events, showcasing his own creations. One of his most notable achievements was the construction of six cars, including two berlinettas and four barchette, all derived from the Fiat 500. These cars were a testament to his engineering skills and creativity.

Despite his success as a coachbuilder, Enrico Maestri never lost his love for the Mille Miglia race. In 1954, he once again entered the competition, this time with his own creation, a stunning barchetta that turned heads wherever it went. Although he didn’t win the race, his participation alone was a testament to his dedication and love for the sport.

Enrico Maestri’s legacy lives on in the automotive world. His innovative designs and meticulous craftsmanship continue to inspire car enthusiasts and coachbuilders to this day. His work has been recognized and celebrated in various exhibitions and shows, cementing his status as one of the greats in the field.
