I could sit here and preach that every time I ride, I’m always in full safety gear from my garage. But that wouldn’t be true.
I make compromises. I wear a mesh jacket when it’s scorching hot because it’s more comfortable than my leather one. And that’s just the start. I think most of us take a more flexible approach. After all, we ride motorcycles, so we need a certain level of comfort with varying risk levels.
As a kid, I was adamant because I thought gear was fantastic. Mick Doohan was my hero, always clad head to toe in fresh gear. That meant when I tore around the yard on my dirt bike, I wanted to wear all the gear I owned. Bulky race gloves for the road, armor if I had one that fit, and my dad’s hand-me-down race helmet. (I used my allowance to buy a colored visor.) Sometimes, my dad would go over to a neighbor’s in summer with an open face helmet, and even before I had body hair, I’d let him have it as if he were breaking house rules. How could he wear it? Exposed chin! Madness?
Now, as an adult, I really enjoy a jet helmet, in the right circumstances. I usually wear it just cruising around the neighborhood on my 50cc scooter, but I’ve come to love the wind in my face and the ease of talking to a cashier without taking off my helmet. Plus, I’ve noticed a different kind of connection with people while riding—the pedestrians are friendlier, and drivers are more likely to make eye contact—which I attribute to my visible face. I’ve also found my peripheral vision to be much wider. Recently, while riding a Honda NC750X, I realized my beloved full-face lid blocks my view of the mirrors in my natural riding position, where an open visor wouldn’t. It’s a compromise in impact safety, no doubt, but I’d say there are some benefits too.

What’s your priority gear list?

A fun exercise to do with friends (or in the comments below) is to ask what gear is most important to you. If you could only wear one piece of gear, what would it be? I really hope your answer is a helmet.
After your top choice, what’s next on your priority list? A jacket? Gloves? In the city, I might go for gloves first because hands are delicate and often touch the ground first. If speeds were high, I’d go with a jacket for some armor and abrasion protection. Riding pants would probably be last; I’d prefer regular jeans and good boots over armored jeans with sneakers. Ankles are tricky and important. My driving variables and personal sensitivities are different from yours, and I assume we’d all come up with lists that are similar but not identical.
Listening to someone else’s perspective can change your outlook or even your priorities. Early in my motorcycle journalism career, I received a pair of gloves to test from Alpinestars. They were city/street gloves, a full gauntlet design with molded carbon fiber knuckles and extra layers of leather in impact areas. But they had a glaring oversight: no wrist closure strap. Sure, I’m a street rider at heart, but darn it, even if I weren’t, I’d vividly remember that slow-motion crash shot Bruce Brown captured in the original “On Any Sunday,” where a rider’s glove flies off as he skids along the asphalt. No wrist strap on a modern street glove seemed silly.
A few weeks later, I had the chance to meet Alpinestars’ CEO and took the opportunity to ask about strapless gloves. His response was straightforward: if people have to fiddle with or fasten a glove, they might choose not to wear them at all. Part of his motivation is selling gloves, of course, but I agree that I’d rather someone wear strapless gloves than no gloves at all.
Similarly, an old racing buddy of mine caught me mocking a rider wearing a decades-old helmet on the street. “Hey, it’s better than no helmet,” he said, and he’s right. An old Bieffe from the ’90s is better than nothing. Much better than nothing, in fact, according to a study on hundreds of EPS-lined bicycle helmets published in the Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.
Talking to yourself and/or some riding buddies can be a good way to assess what you think is important and why. It’s also a good way to check yourself and make sure your gear choices really align with your safety priorities. I might argue that wearing a mesh jacket on a hot day is safer because I’m not distracted by excessive heat. The truth is, I’m also making a compromise to be more comfortable and a little less protected.
If there’s anyone reading this article who wears a full factory gear setup every time they ride, complete with an airbag and without fail, hats off to you. I love my Aerostich, my sport-touring boots, and my full-face Shoei. That will always be the kit I feel best in. But I’m not that kid pretending to be Mick Doohan anymore. And even if I were, the last time I saw a picture of Mighty Mick on a bike, he was on a scooter; wearing jeans and sneakers.
I’ve come to the point where I think different circumstances allow for different gear, and maybe he has too. Shipping times are about 7 working days, shipping is done via negotiable fast shipping.
