Like cornering ABS, I expect to see adaptive cruise control on mid-range motorcycles at some point, just as you can now find adaptive cruise control functionality on a slew of mid-range cars like Toyota Corollas.
But don’t get too excited just yet, because adaptive cruise isn’t available on even the most expensive motorcycles!
However, if you’ve come across active cruise, you’ve probably wondered:
What is the operation of adaptive cruise control?
How does adaptive cruise control work? Is my motorcycle already self-driving?
What motorcycles are available with adaptive cruise control, and how do they differ?
I’ll try to address everything below and update it as more and more bikes get ACC units.
In General, How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?
To begin, an adaptive cruise control system, like an IMU / cornering ABS, is better described as part of the motorcycle’s overall safety and control system. It’s an addition to an already complex system.
To put it simply, installing an ACC system on a motorcycle entails adding a control module as well as radar emitters and sensors to the ECU units that control everything.
When the ACC system on your motorcycle detects that you’re approaching another vehicle too quickly or that you’re already too close to one, it reduces your cruising speed until you’re at a safe distance. It also detects when the vehicle ahead of you is moving slower than you and uses that as an input (whether to slow down, or to set off an alert).
However, the safety control system does not rely solely on radar input. It still takes input from the rest of the bike, including the inertial measurement units, wheel speed sensors, and, of course, the engine. All of these are critical inputs for cruise control and other systems.
The physical components that are added to a motorcycle to enable adaptive cruise control are as follows:
Front and rear radars (one each)
A computer with ACC
A connection to the engine and a display
On the 2022 Ninja H2 SX SE, their premium supercharged 200 hp everyday bike that stretches both the definition of “sport tourer” and your arms out of their sockets, Kawasaki represents their safety systems, which include active cruise control (among other things).
Kawasaki, BMW, and Ducati all use a Bosch system that Bosch generally classes as radar-based assistance systems (“ARAS”). Bosch has been building these systems for cars and trucks for years.Because the parts are all from Bosch, they currently look the same across manufacturers. Take a look at the BMW radar unit above; it looks identical to the one in the Ducati Multistrada V4, as well as the generic one on the Bosch website.
I believe they are interchangeable. For the time being, it’s not like getting a Ducati part and stuffing it into your BMW or KTM motorcycle will save you money. However, years from now, when rebuilding a crashed classic, you might be able to use a salvaged Bosch radar sensor from one bike in another.
Here’s how Ducati installs the front radar in the Multistrada V4’s nose.
The mounting point for a front radar sensor is carefully selected by manufacturers. There must be no radiation-absorbing materials in their path (like metal bars).
Furthermore, even though radar does not operate on the visible spectrum (unlike, say, a laser… or any light), the area around the radar must be kept clean.
This means you should keep it free of mud, debris, bug splatter, and even dust from riding in fog or rain.
This is due to the fact that mud or bug splatter may absorb some radiation. This is due to the way radar works.
Radar works on the most basic level by emitting a pulse of radiation and then listening for when that pulse bounces back from another moving object, as well as any shift in frequency (that indicates the relative speed of the object as it moves closer or away).
The sensor must be able to pick up the returned signal cleanly in order to provide an accurate reading. The signal received is quite weak because the returned signal is simply the bit of radiation that bounced off another vehicle that could be quite far away — perhaps 200 feet or 60 meters at freeway/interstate speeds. You don’t want dirt or debris complicating the sensor’s job.
The Bosch adaptive cruise control supports a variety of functions, which are implemented by all manufacturers. These are the functions:
- Adaptive cruise (of course): The core purpose of the system! You set a speed and a comfort distance, and the motorcycle keeps to the maximum speed as long as there’s no vehicle within that distance.
- Forward collision warning: this looks for sudden danger ahead, e.g. a stationary object or a car that has swerved into your lane. If you’re going too fast and should emergency brake, the bike will give you a visual and/or audible warning.
- Blind spot detection: This is where the rear-facing radar comes into play. When the system detects a vehicle in the rider’s blind spot, the bike gives you a visual warning.
Below, we’ll go over how to use these features on various motorcycles.
Let’s take a closer look at the main feature: active cruise control. This has a fairly consistent effect on every motorcycle (so far).
As I previously stated, in theory, you set the speed and let the system determine whether it is safe to continue at that speed. If a vehicle is moving slowly, the bike maintains a safe distance; if the vehicle speeds up or moves out of the way, the bike resumes its speed.
However, there is a lot of nuance to riding a bike. What happens, for example, if you turn a corner?
When you ride around a curve, the ACC system reduces the bike’s speed to maintain a comfortable lean angle.
Furthermore, as your lean angle increases, the bike’s acceleration and deceleration are limited. This is done to avoid being caught off guard by sudden braking or acceleration.
For example, if you’re going around a corner and the bike is going slower because of a car in front of you, but that car suddenly speeds away, the bike won’t lurch forward — it’ll be much more gentle while you’re leaned over.
What Adaptive/Active Cruise Control Isn’t Capable Of
Adaptive/active cruise control, like any other rider safety system, is not something you should rely on to save your life.
Motorcycle manufacturers are quick to remind riders that adaptive cruise control is not a life-saving device. You control the bike by twisting the throttle, applying the brakes, and steering it.
This also applies to the ACC’s front collision warning system. If you receive a warning that you are approaching something too quickly, it is YOUR responsibility to apply the brakes or swerve. The user is responsible for emergency braking.
According to motorcycle owners’ manuals, the active cruise control and front collision warning systems are also limited in how well they work when
- The system is limited by the environment, such as when traveling through heavy rain, fog, snow, steam, or smoke. This throws off the radar.
- You’re riding on winding, curvy, or undulating roads (hilly areas)
- You’re riding in areas with a lot of radar-reflecting objects, such as a tunnel or a parking lot, or simply with a lot of road-side objects, such as friends with cameras.
- You’ve significantly altered the tires or wheels.
- Because you’re too “adventurous,” the radar sensor is covered in dirt, dust, or mud.
- A powerful impact has struck the radar system.
- Electromagnetic interference exists (that messes with the radar signal)
- You’re riding in an unusual situation, such as a staggered group ride, quickly overtaking, or doing wheelies and stoppies (aha, the
- Kawasaki manual admits you might be doing this! ), or even lane-splitting (remember, it’s legal almost everywhere in the world except most states in the US).
- You are abruptly crossed by an animal. Or even by car at a crossroads
- There are flying objects around, such as balls or plastic bags (the BMW R 1250 RT manual literally says “balls or plastic bags”).
- The bike overheats.
- The motorcycle becomes irritated with you because you’re riding strangely (ed: I added this one because it’s why my bike sometimes acts up).
Adaptive cruise control systems only work with objects that are large enough and moving in the same direction. They don’t always pick up.
- Cyclists\sAnimals
- Vehicles that are either stationary or traveling in the opposite direction
- A vehicle approaching from the side (until picked up)
Do you get the picture? It’s merely a convenience. You are the one who maintains command.
Using Adaptive Cruise Control on Different Motorcycles
So you’re riding a motorcycle worth more than my entire collection and want to put this wizardry to use? (this is the situation I was in). How do you use adaptive cruise control and test its effectiveness?
In theory, adaptive cruise control works the same way as regular cruise control. When you reach the desired speed, you select cruise to allow the motorcycle to take over the throttle function.
The difference with adaptive cruise control is that it doesn’t just set your speed and forget it; it also regulates your speed if the vehicle in front of you is traveling slower than you would like.
So there are two things you must configure with active cruise control.
Your cruising speed — the speed at which you ride
The following distance — which you can set either while riding or when you have time to dive through the screens.
You can also change a few other settings from the menus, such as how active the cruise is in adjusting its speed.
In any case, you can use your active cruise control as standard (non-adaptive) cruise control. This is something to consider if you intend to keep the motorcycle for a long time. You may ride through countries where your radar is not permitted to operate. In those cases, you navigate the menus, disable active cruise control, and use cruise control as usual.
Manufacturers have different methods for adjusting the active cruise control system’s comfortable follow distance.
BMW: As seen in the button above, BMW has a dedicated button for follow distance. You have three follow distance options. They call it “Distance Control” in the manual, which gives you an idea of how they think about adaptive cruise. This button is located near the cruise control switches. You can choose between three distances: short, medium, and long, but the manual doesn’t specify what each one means.
Ducati: In addition to the cruise speed buttons, Ducati has “+” and “-” buttons for increasing and decreasing follow distance. You can choose between four levels, which correspond to 0.8 to 2.0 seconds.
KTM: You can choose between five follow distances under the Cruise Control / ACC Distance menu, ranging from “very short” (0.9 seconds) to “very long” (2.0 seconds).
Kawasaki has a standard cruise button, and you can set the distance from the handlebar by pressing the ‘fn’ button simultaneously with the bottom option button. It’s not obvious just by looking at the buttons.
When you set the follow distance, all manufacturers have a way of displaying it on the screen. In general, it’s some variation of what BMW displays (below). There are various symbols for
The set follow distance (from short to long)
Whether or not an object is being tracked
Whether a hazard has been detected (and you need to take emergency evasive action) — either a red or yellow flashing symbol
If there is a problem and the ACC system cannot function for some reason,
Active Cruise Control BMW Motorcycles — R 1250 RT, BMW R 18 Transcontinental / Bagger
BMW first announced that the 2021 model of the BMW R 1250 RT would have adaptive cruise control.
BMW has also added adaptive cruise to its two full-fat versions of the R 18 cruiser, the BMW R 18 Transcontinental and Bagger. They are similar, but the Transcontinental has a higher top box and a larger screen.
The ACC system on the three BMW motorcycles is limited to a front-mounted radar. They lack blind spot monitoring.
Since three BMW motorcycles have received ACC, BMW owners have been wondering when it will reach the other high-end models. So far, there has been no word on the R 1250 GS, the K 1600 bikes (despite some new versions being announced), the rest of the R 18 line, or the S 1000 XR — all of which I believe are prime candidates for ACC based on their position in the product lines.
Adaptive Cruise Control Ducati Motorcycles — Multistrada V4 (Various trim levels)
Adaptive cruise is currently available only on the Ducati Multistrada V4. It has had it since the 2021 model year, though early owners could only activate it after a while. Since the 2022 model year, it has been standard.
The Ducati Multistrada V4 was the first motorcycle to feature adaptive cruise control, but the difference was minimal (just bragging rights).
Ducati’s top-tier adventure touring bike is the Multistrada V4. It is the most recent in a long line of motorcycles that began with the 2003 Ducati Multistrada 1000DS, which featured an air/oil-cooled L-twin engine. In 2021, Ducati gave its premium tourer the V4 engine. The engine isn’t just “detuned” from the Panigale V4, it’s completely different — called the “Granturismo” engine, it’s the first Duc engine in a long time to abandon the Desmoquattro design in favor of more common spring-driven valves.
Despite the absence of desmodromic valves. The V4 engine still revs like a demon for a big engine, reaching a top speed of 10500 rpm and producing 170 CV (168 bhp, 125 kW). The icing on the cake is the extremely long maintenance intervals for valve inspections of 37000 miles / 60000 km.
The specific Multistrada V4 models with radar-enabled adaptive cruise control vary by region. Some have the V4 S, while others have the V4 but with the “radar” package. I’m sure there are other possibilities.
Because the Multistrada V4 is the premium adventure tourer and the only tourer in the lineup (Ducati does not make a sports tourer… the Supersport is more of an everyday sport bike), I’m not sure what other bikes Ducati might bring active cruise. Maybe the XDiavel, but I’m not sure.
Ninja H2 SX (2022+) by Kawasaki
The Kawasaki H2 SX, a high-speed sport tourer in the supercharged Kawasaki H2 series, is the first model to get adaptive cruise control (along with blind spot monitoring and forward collision alerts).
Despite its high power output, the Kawasaki H2 SX is the more approachable sport tourer, designed for everyday riding. Riders aren’t aware of the massive power available unless they dare to pin the throttle and hold it there for an extended period of time. Otherwise, it’s very easy to ride, as are many Japanese high-powered sport tourers.
Kawasaki has long been the Japanese manufacturer to bring high-tech features to everyday motorcycles before the competition. This applied to ABS, traction control, and even cornering ABS (the consumer-oriented 2017 Kawasaki Ninja 1000 had cornering ABS).
They’re following the same script with adaptive cruise control. I’m hoping to see active cruise on more affordable sport bikes like the Ninja 1000. (though that did only just get cruise control from 2020). I’d anticipate seeing it first on the Kawasaki Versys 1000.
Adaptive Cruise Control on KTM motorcycles
Active cruise control is available on the 2021+ KTM 1290 Super Adventure S.
The Super Adventure S is the Super Adventure line’s street-oriented super tourer. KTM also makes the Super Adventure R, which has more off-road touring equipment (such as a 21-inch front wheel), but the SAR does not yet have active cruise control.
The SAS has a lot of high-tech features, including semi-active WP suspension, a 7-inch TFT display, and, of course, the full Bosch safety suite.
The jewel of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S, however, is the same as that of other 1290 motorcycles: a monstrous 1301 cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin producing 118 kW (158 bhp / 160 CV) at 9000 rpm.
KTM doesn’t have a sport tourer (that’s the SAS’s job), but I’m curious when active cruise will be available in the 890 adventure range.
2023+ Yamaha MT-09 Tracer 9 GT+
Earlier in 2022, RideApart sleuths discovered a Tracer 9 GT being tested with radar sensor units attached. Yamaha confirmed in November 2022 that the Tracer 9 GT+ (a new model designation) will have adaptive cruise control in the 2023 model.
The 2023 Yamaha Tracer 9 GT+ is the first reasonably priced middleweight motorcycle to feature adaptive cruise control. That’s a very interesting move! The Tracer 9 GT is “affordable” for its class (middleweight sport tourers), and certainly less expensive than the other motorcycles on this list for the 2023 model year. The GT+ will also undoubtedly outperform the Multistrada V4S, for example.
The Tracer 9 GT+ is also unusual in this list because, despite being a relatively “premium” bike (it already has active suspension and an IMU), it has a middleweight engine — a 890cc triple.
It’s worth noting that the Tracer 9 GT standard trim, which will be sold alongside the GT+ in 2023 and will still have a lot of bells and whistles (including active suspension and standard cruise control), will not have adaptive cruise control.
The Yamaha Tracer 900 / 9 models have received far more updates than the FJR1300, Yamaha’s sport cruising stalwart. The FJR’s days are probably numbered.
More information can be found in the Yamaha Tracer 900 / 9 rider’s manual.
In the Works — Manufacturers who have yet to release adaptive cruise control systems for motorcycles.
What’s surprising is that some brands haven’t released any motorcycles with adaptive cruise control, even though others have, and Yamaha has it on a middleweight.
Adaptive Cruise Control Harley-Davidson Motorcycles — Coming Soon?
Harley-Davidson has also applied for an adaptive cruise control patent, indicating that they may not want to use the Bosch system. However, no models with adaptive / active cruise have been released.
With the Harley-Davidson Pan America’s list of advanced tech features (like adaptive ride height), I’d expect it to be the first candidate.
Harley-Davidson has also had cruise control features for some time.
Honda Gold Wing/Africa Twin (after 2023). (Unconfirmed)
According to rumors, the next-generation Gold Wing and Africa Twin will have adaptive cruise control.
Motorrad Online in Germany discovered patents for both front and rear radar systems in the Gold Wing and the Africa Twin. The Bosch sensor is accommodated in the Gold Wing’s fairing, but not in the Africa Twin’s, so Honda may develop their own.
Indian Motorcycles with Adaptive Cruise Control will be available soon.
Indian has yet to release a motorcycle with radar-assisted adaptive cruise.
However, as of mid-2021, it appears that Indian has begun to make plans for it, based on patents filed.
The liquid-cooled Indian Challenger motorcycles are my first choice.
Vehicles that do not yet have Active Cruise Control
A few brands are missing from this list. I’ll update them as the list shrinks!
Suzuki does not offer a motorcycle with adaptive cruise control. They just updated the Suzuki Hayabusa to the third generation, which would have been an ideal candidate. Suzuki, on the other hand, is a little slower to incorporate premium features into their bikes, which I don’t mind because it keeps their bikes affordable.
Honda is another example. Honda recently released the NT1100 sport tourer, which includes cruise control but is inactive. I’d like to see an active cruise on the Africa Twin at some point, but that won’t happen for a few years.
