Most motorcycle service and repair jobs can be performed at home without the need for a large, expensive tool kit. When putting together a starter kit of motorcycle-specific tools, keep the following guidelines in mind.

Essential Tools

A starter kit for new mechanics includes a few basics that are typically available in sets, including:

• Screwdrivers
• Wrenches
• Sockets

Which Screw Drivers?

Because so many motorcycle parts require the removal of panels or cases, quality is especially important when selecting screwdrivers. Wear and tear will quickly become a source of frustration with this tool. If the tip of a Philips-head or crosshead screwdriver is rounded off, it will damage any screw it is used on.

Replaceable tips are available on some crosshead screw drivers. Because replacement bits are inexpensive, these are an excellent choice for professionals.

A motorcycle mechanic will find an impact driver to be an invaluable tool in addition to a basic screwdriver set. These drivers provide both turning and impacting force and should always be used on crosshead engine-casing screws.

Wrenches

Hand-held wrenches, also known as spanners, are used to remove or refit hexagonal-shaped bolts and nuts.

On motorcycles, two types of wrenches are commonly used: open-ended and ring. These wrenches can be purchased as a combination wrench with both an open and a ring end.

Sockets

In many applications, the socket and ratchet system has replaced wrenches to speed up the removal and refitting of nuts and bolts.

The socket’s internal shape is either hexagonal or multipoint (also known as twelve point).

Quality

The quality of tools is a critical consideration for any aspiring mechanic. Many mechanics used to believe that “guaranteed for life” meant the life of the tool, not the company, and that this was the only option when purchasing tools. Today, there are numerous options between high price and high quality.

A tool buyer should consider the item in question in terms of how it will be used as a general rule. A 10-mm combination wrench, for example, will be widely used on all modern motorcycles (not classics or vintage bikes). As a result, this wrench in particular must be of superior quality.

High-end items will cost significantly more than lower-quality items. Mechanics will frequently purchase a set with a mid-range price and quality and then replace worn items (such as the 10-mm wrench) with top-quality items as and when they become worn. It is important to note that tool warranties do not cover normal wear and tear.

Tool Boxes

As a mechanic’s tool kit expands, so does the need for a larger tool box to house it all. With this in mind, someone who is just starting out with tools should consider purchasing a tool box that can be expanded. Most tool box manufacturers, for example, sell top boxes and roll-around base units separately. Because most of the first tools you buy will be small, the top box is a good place to start. When the need (or funds) arises, the roll-around cabinet can be purchased.

The price of all toolboxes is affected by two factors: the material used and the type of drawer slider used. Unpainted stainless steel boxes are the best choice for most applications because they are durable and easy to clean.

Because drawer sliders are used every time a mechanic requires a tool, their quality is critical. Steel ball-bearing sliders are the best option. These sliders are commonly referred to as “heavy duty.” However, if cleaned and lubricated on a regular basis, nylon and other man-made materials used on drawer sliders can last for many years.

Beyond Basic Tools

Having established a good basic tool kit, you can begin looking into more specialist tools on an as-needed basis, such as:

• Electrically powered tools
• Compressor and air tools
• Pullers and extractors

Electrically Powered Tools

Aside from soldering irons, most mechanics’ first purchase after basic tools is an electric drill. A variety of drills will also be required. Battery-powered drills have grown in popularity in recent years as battery technology has improved both power and longevity. However, most battery-powered drills are still bulky and restricted to easily accessible locations.

Compressor and Air Tools

Most mechanics will say they don’t know how they got by without a compressor and air tools in the beginning of their careers. A blowgun and an impact driver are two air tools that every motorcycle mechanic should have.

Blowguns are inexpensive and come in kits with tire inflation chucks. Blowguns are primarily used to clean component parts such as those found in carburetors. A pressurized canister used to clean computer keyboards can serve as a stand-in for a compressor and blowgun.

 

The impact gun is an essential air tool for disassembling many high-torque motorcycle components. Large spindle nuts, clutch center nuts, flywheel nuts, and fork leg holding bolts can all be loosened with this tool. Although all of these items can be disassembled with standard tools, the impact gun will make the job much easier.

Compressors come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but an eight-gallon holding tank and the ability to produce 125 psi (pounds per square inch) should be considered the bare minimum.

Pullers and Extractors

The repair or service jobs that a mechanic is likely to tackle become more involved as their knowledge grows. Pullers and extractors are now an essential part of the mechanic’s tool kit. However, because pullers and extractors are somewhat specialized in their application, the mechanic should only buy them when they are required.

Home mechanics can obtain a good usable tool kit that performs the majority of tasks at a low cost. Going for quality is still an option, especially if you can use hand tools. So, get your tool kit together and get the bike in top working order!
