I recently purchased a motorcycle that required new fork seals (discovered thanks to my trusty inspection checklist). And, given its history (and the fact that it’s a little bouncy), I was certain it needed new fork oil as well.
Changing fork seals and oil has been a rarity on my bikes since the first one (decades ago), when I was too green to understand what any of it meant.
To be honest, I’ve always been a little nervous about motorcycle suspension. Every time I try something new on my motorcycle, I have a small fear that I won’t be able to put it back together and will have to call in a pro.
So, this time, I resolved to learn everything I could about motorcycle forks and approach the problem with confidence.
However, motorcycle manuals recommend replacing fork fluid more frequently than most people do. Definitely more frequently than “never.” Manuals typically recommend every 30-40,000 kilometers, with some (such as Ducati) also providing a time period.
So, in order to explain it to myself and others, I’ve written down everything I’ve learned about motorcycle forks, fork oil, and what can go wrong with a motorcycle’s front suspension.
One thing to remember about changing fork oil is that we’ll still have to do it in the age of electric motorcycles. Maintaining the chain (or shaft or belt), brakes, tyres, and controls is similar. There is always something new to learn about motorcycle maintenance!
Aside from maintenance, people who want to get more performance out of their motorcycles should consider upgrading their forks. As a result, I frequently hear terms like “cartridges,” “gold valves,” and so on. I’ve also included it here. Enjoy!
What is the function of a motorcycle fork?
Before we get started, let’s make sure we all know what a fork is! We all start somewhere…
The suspension at the front of a motorcycle is referred to as the “fork.”
Almost every motorcycle available today has an axle connected to the fork that holds the front wheel in place. A fork is so named because it has two prongs that go around each side of the wheel.
The fork suspension (which is what most people mean when they say “forks”) is essentially two big pistons filled with springs, oil, and other stuff to make it work between the axle and the rest of the motorcycle.
But why have a suspension at all? Many people believe the purpose of suspension is to keep the rider comfortable. That is one goal. However, another important (if not more important) purpose is to maximize traction โ to keep the tyre in contact with the road under varying conditions (bumps, acceleration, braking, cornering).
When the second purpose โ keeping the tyre in contact with the road โ is considered, a lot of motorcycle and car suspension design begins to make more sense. In reality, passenger comfort becomes an unintended (but necessary) side effect.
What types of motorcycle forks are there?
Motorcycle forks are classified into two types:
Traditional motorcycle forks, with the fork tube on top and the sleeve on the bottom, and upside-down motorcycle forks (also known as USD forks… No, this does not imply that you must pay in US dollars!) with the fork tube on the bottom and the sleeve on top
In the early 2000s, upside-down forks became popular. The first to get them were early sportsbikes. Many motorcycles now have them, including large cruisers like the M109R; however, most old-fashioned (or “retro”) motorcycles still have conventional, “right side up” forks.
BMW has been experimenting with suspension for decades, and you may come across terms like “telelever” and “duolever” in their marketing for some of their popular models. That is an entirely different subject.
Conventional Forks vs Upside-Down Forks โ Whatโs the Difference?
The main distinction between conventional and upside-down motorcycle forks is “unsprung mass.” The unsprung mass is the weight of everything under the suspension spring, including the wheels, brakes, tyres, and the bottom half of the suspension fork.
The reason you want to reduce unsprung mass is that the less unsprung mass your suspension has, the faster it can react to changes in road or traction conditions.

This means that if you go over bumps, brake suddenly, or change directions suddenly, the suspension will be able to adapt to the changes faster if everything under the suspension is lighter. It’s the same reason why fast-running animals have tiny, thin legs โ to allow them to move quickly.
What does motorcycle forkย oilย do?
Motorcycle fork oil’s job is to keep the motorcycle from bouncing around after the spring compresses and then rebounds.
In a car, fork oil (and the internals of the fork) serve as the shock absorber. It’s just that on a motorcycle, the spring and shock are usually combined.
The spring is the most important component of the suspension. When you drive over bumps or potholes, or when you accelerate and decelerate, the spring compresses or extends, causing the wheel to move up and down.
The issue is that the spring holds a lot of energy. If there was nothing to stop it after the bump, it would continue to bounce up and down. If you’ve ever ridden in (or just seen) an old car with a blown shock absorber, you’ve probably experienced this.
As a result, the oil absorbs the energy and “dampens” the bouncing. It does this by being squeezed through a tiny hole in the simplest motorcycles.
As the spring compresses, oil is squeezed through a tiny hole.
Oil is sucked through a tiny hole as the spring expands.
Because it is difficult to squeeze oil through a hole, it absorbs energy and causes the spring to stop bouncing around.
Whether you have damping rod forks or cartridge forks determines how and where the oil is used to dampen a motorcycle fork spring.
What are damping rod forks and cartridge forks? And โEmulatorsโ?
In modern motorcycles, there are two types of forks: damping rod forks (old, simple) and cartridge forks (newer, more complex).
This is true regardless of whether the forks are conventional or inverted. There are conventional motorcycle forks with damping rods or cartridges, as well as inverted forks with damping rods or cartridges.
Damping rod motorcycle forks
Damping rod forks are the most fundamental type of motorcycle fork suspension: a spring with oil to dampen recoil.
Damping rods are still used in motorcycles today. You may have heard of “basic” suspension on a motorcycle. This is true of most low-cost motorcycles, such as the Ninja 400 or the SV650. It’s also true of some surprisingly expensive bikes, such as the latest basic BMW R NineT models, such as the Pure and Urban GS. It’s incredible that such an expensive bike can have such basic suspension.
Let me explain why damping rod motorcycle suspension is regarded as fundamental.
The damping action in a damping rod fork is caused by oil being pushed through a series of small holes. When you hit a bump, the fork compresses and a piston forces oil through a hole.
This sounds fine, except that this simple type of damping has a very narrow effective operating range. Damping rod forks are much less effective when the suspension moves too slowly or too quickly.
The issue with damping rod motorcycle forks is that they can be soft and underdamped during low-speed movement (such as braking) and then abruptly become harsh during quick changes (like small bumps).
The oil being forced through a small hole provides resistance proportional to the square of velocity, which is why damping rod forks can be both too soft and too harsh.
When the oil moves slowly, there is little to no resistance; however, when the oil moves quickly, the resistance increases dramatically. As a result, damping rod forks are only effective when the bumps cause the suspension to move in the desired direction.
You are most likely to encounter damping rod fork limits when
When approaching a stop sign or seeing an obstacle, you apply more force than usual. Your bike’s front end gently dives, and you may even bottom out.
When pushing the bike hard into corners, you go harder than average. As you brake into the corner and accelerate out, you’ll notice “dive” and/or instability in the front suspension.
You are riding on an uneven or corrugated road.
Your teeth have begun to chatter!
Of course, you can avoid most of the above by riding slowly and on good roads. This is why a typical test ride does not reveal the limitations of simple suspension.
The solution to this chaos is to use a valve to change the rate of flow of oil to even it out a little and make damping more consistent. This is the purpose of cartridge inks.
Forks for cartridge motorcycles
Cartridge forks have replaced traditional damping rod forks in modern sports motorcycles. And this happened a long time ago โ my 2001 CBR600F4i, for example, has cartridge forks. (However, a modern 2020 Suzuki SV650 still has damping rod forks, so if you intend to push it, a suspension upgrade should be first on your list.)
Cartridge forks aim to make damping more linear, proportional to velocity rather than velocity squared.
Cartridge motorcycle fork legs house a small cylinder that functions as a shock absorber. The “cartridge” is this small cylinder inside the leg. It’s sitting in fork oil. The damping effect is achieved by a piston moving through the cartridge.
A cartridge fork’s damping is more linear thanks to two stacks of spring-loaded shims (which look like washers) on each piston on each end of the cartridge. These spring-loaded shims function similarly to a valve. When oil flows through the piston, the shims are pushed away from the piston face.
When the fork compresses (due to braking or a bump), oil forces the spring-loaded valve on one side apart. This side dampens compression.
When the fork expands (on rebound), oil forces the spring-loaded valve on the other side apart. This results in rebound damping.
A compression piston is shown on the left side of the photo, and a rebound piston is shown on the right. Each piston begins with a compression holder, then a Christmas tree-shaped stack of shims, followed by a washer, collar, spring, and cap to complete the valve, and a nut to hold it all together.
Because the oil flows in the opposite direction, the rebound piston is the inverse of the compression piston. They are not identical because rebound and compression damping are not tuned identically.
The cartridge has the effect of a) making rebound and compression damping more linear and b) separating damping for rebound and compression, allowing a suspension tuner to reduce diving under braking while increasing comfort over harsh bumps. This is the best of both worlds!
Compression and rebound damping can be fine-tuned on each side in two ways:
Increase or decrease the number of shims, or replace them with shims of varying thickness and diameter.
Turn a screw to tighten or loosen the spring to adjust the damping.
Emulators for gold valves and cartridges
Anyone without cartridge forks is probably now searching for “how can I get cartridge forks?” That is certainly one solution to the problem.
However, an emulator is a more common way of making damping rod forks behave like cartridge forks. These are referred to as “cartridge emulators,” “gold valve emulators,” or simply “gold valves.” Race Tech, a well-known manufacturer, is frequently responsible for them. I’ve seen some alternatives, but Race Tech is a household name in the industry, and their emulators are reasonably priced (e.g., $150 in USD for an SV650).
An emulator is a device that is installed inside the motorcycle forks to provide greater control over compression damping. You still can’t control rebound damping (as in a cartridge), but you can control it with oil viscosity without significantly affecting compression damping.
The main spring holds the emulator cartridge in place on top of the damping rod. You install it by disassembling the fork and enlarging the compression holes, which effectively reduces compression damping and allows the emulator to take over.
Oil bleeds through the low-speed bleed holes in the valve piston during low-speed compression (braking). The main valve piston cannot be opened because there is insufficient pressure.
Oil pressure lifts the emulator piston off its seat during high-speed compression (big bumps or possibly jumps), allowing oil to flow more easily. This reduces the harshness of going over bumps.
So, instead of cartridge motorcycle forks, why not get an emulator? Because an emulator is less expensive and far superior to stock. It provides just enough adjustability to overcome forks’ major weakness, costs US$150 for the parts (vs $800 for new cartridge-style forks, or a lot of hunting around in used parts forums), and of course labor. And for many people, including many track day enthusiasts who use low-end machines, an emulator works perfectly well.
Why should you change the oil in your motorcycle forks?
There are two reasons why you should change the oil in your motorcycle forks:
Because it deteriorates over time/after use and no longer performs as well as it once did, you wish to alter the damping effect.
Unless you really know what you’re doing, the first reason is probably the best in many cases. Fork oil accumulates over time:
Generally deteriorates โ being forced through a hole thousands of times is extremely damaging to oil. It just gets worse. Anything that receives energy gradually deteriorates.
Absorbs air โ damping rod forks (of which many are still in use today, even on new motorcycles) contain both air and oil. When air is mixed with oil, it degenerates.
Absorbs other muck โ The fork is a moving mechanism, and all moving mechanisms shed a small amount of waste as they wear. And while fork seals are useful (unless they break! ), they are never perfect. Some muck will seep in and contaminate the oil, causing it to simply fail.
All three of the aforementioned factors cause fork oil to lose its dampening ability.
The second reason is that you may want to adjust the damping effect of the fork โ most people prefer to go heavier. When you use a heavier oil, it is more difficult for it to pass through the damping holes (in a damping rod fork) or the valves (in a cartridge fork or one equipped with an emulator).
Changing to a heavier weight oil is not a simple decision. You should be aware that your suspension operates as a system, and that you will need to adjust compression and rebound damping afterward. If you don’t have that level of adjustability, such as non-adjustable simple damping rod forks, a heavier weight oil may make your ride uncomfortable.
What happens if you don’t change the oil in your forks?
Old fork oil cannot effectively dampen a motorcycle’s spring.
This could be felt in a variety of ways:
When you ride over bumps, the front end of the motorcycle is “bouncy.” It could even squeak.
There is no effect from adjusting the damping (if your forks have adjustable damping).
Contaminated fork oil can cause fork seals to fail, resulting in oil leaks.
Broken fork seals initiate a vicious cycle in which more contaminants enter and contaminate the oil, and the oil seeps out (meaning less oil = even less damping). If your forks are turned upside down, your oil will leak out faster.
Fork oil begins clear and can remain so for years. When you change old fork oil, it appears dark and disgusting. That’s a clear indication that it’s time to make a change.
Which fork oil is the best to use?
Check your owner’s manual for information on fork oil. It varies depending on the motorcycle. You must understand a) what fork oil to use and b) how much to use.
For example, in my garage over the last few years, the recommended viscosity for fork oil for motorcycles has been 5W, 7.5W, and 10W. People on owner forums recommend a variety of other brands and weights, even suggesting that one oil of one brand and viscosity may not perform the same as another oil of the same viscosity. It messes with your head!
There is no simple answer, but the consensus among motorcycle suspension tuners is that changing the fork oil (if it’s still good) is nowhere near as important as upgrading to a cartridge emulator, full cartridge forks, or other fork setups.
When should you change the oil in your forks?
The general consensus is that you should change the fork oil after a certain amount of time or distance.
The service interval for fork oil is determined by the motorcycle. Things differ depending on the manufacturer.
For example, here are the recommended fork oil replacement intervals for a few different brands of motorcycles:

The distilled wisdom of motorcycle manuals and the internet appears to be as follows:
Replace the fork oil every 30-40,000 kilometers.
Every year, inspect your motorcycle forks for proper operation. Replace the oil if it’s not performing as expected (bottoming out or riding harshly) (along with doing whatever else you do to fix it).
If there is a leak, replace it immediately along with the seal.
If you’re wondering whether you should change your fork oil every so many years, the answer is no. But, if it’s been more than five years since you’ve removed the front wheel (to change the front tyre), I’d go the extra mile and change the fork oil as well.
How do you replace the fork oil and seals?
Every motorcycle is unique in its construction. However, in general, the procedure for changing the fork oil and seals is as follows:
Loosen the brake calipers, fork tops, and clip-ons (if you have them)
Remove the forks by removing the brakes (which are hung with wire), wheel, and front fairing, then jacking it up on a triple tree stand and undoing the bolts on the triple tree stand.
Remove the dust cap and retainer clip, undo the bolts that hold it together, and then pull it apart to remove the fork seal.
Pour out the oil and properly dispose of it.
Clean everything with brake cleaner.
Reassemble the fork, replacing parts in the order they were removed, and using the new fork seals (and other components)
Replace the fork oil according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, and check the level.
Replace the seal with the old seal, PVC pipe, or a custom tool.
Replace the forks, taking care not to leave any random bits out!
Reinstall the wheel, axle, and brakes, and torque everything back to specification. Replace the clip-ons if you removed them.
In general, changing the fork oil and seals takes 3-4 hours for a novice. This does not include the time required to refinish the fork legs, if necessary.
What causes fork seal failure?
This was discovered while changing my own fork oil and seals. Fork seals fail for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is a breakdown of the seal between the fork inner (the tube) and the fork seal.
The breakdown can happen for a variety of reasons, including
The most common reason is dirt and contamination. There is no perfect seal; otherwise, the fork tube would not move. Contamination wears away at the seal over time, and it eventually fails.
Rust/pitting of the forks, which may occur over time and may be accelerated by debris impact.
Even if there is no rust, the fork inners will wear due to scratching (e.g. being hit by rocks). This is usually fine, but if the scratch is near the seal, it can bounce against it hundreds or thousands of times, eventually wearing it down enough for oil to leak out.
The fork seals on a motorcycle are very likely to fail unless it is never ridden and carefully stored. And if a motorcycle is used, one (or all) of the above will undoubtedly occur.

How do you repair broken motorcycle forks?
There are several methods for repairing damaged motorcycle forks, depending on whether the damage was caused by pitting or scratching from a large number of small rocks.
To begin, sand back the pitted or scratched area. You accomplish this by
Lubricating the area with WD-40 or oil (whichever you prefer)
Sand it in a crisscross pattern (not straight down the shaft) with a kitchen scouring pad or 600 grit then 1200 grit wet-and-dry sandpaper.
Best practices include:
You don’t even need sandpaper for minor scratches or pitting.
Make do with a kitchen scouring pad. You could also use a rolled-up ball of aluminum foil. (However, this did not work for me.)
Steel wool should be avoided.
Many enthusiasts I’ve known have done it. However, for a first-timer, the risk of a shard of steel wool becoming lost in there is significant and unnecessary.
Sand along the tube’s shaft only.
You will create vertical indentation, which may allow oil to leak out.
Sand crisscross with a sanding block to avoid sanding contours into the metal.
Second, if the pitting is severe enough to cause indents, you must smooth out the surface. I’ve seen some “hacks” where people fill pits with superglue or JB Weld, then let it harden before cutting it flat and sanding it again. Continue until the fork is smooth. This hack has the potential to last a long time.
The best solution is to have your forks professionally rechromed. Many major cities have professional outfitters who specialize in obtaining motorcycle forks. They’ll straighten them, remove pitting, and re-chrome them until they look brand new. I received a quote for my forks, which came to US$150 per fork tube.
Another option is to purchase fork tubes online. In the end, this was the cheapest option for me, most likely because I ride a Japanese sport bike with a large number of spare parts (thank goodness).
For peace of mind, I’d always re-chrome or purchase fork tubes online. Sanding will get you most of the way if you’re on a tight budget or working on a minor motorcycle.
What do you need to change the oil in your forks?
Before you begin your fork oil change, you should acquire the following tools and consumables.
Consumables required for fork oil replacement
You should obtain
Fork seals for your motorcycle (purchase OEM โ they’re usually inexpensive, even on European motorcycles)
New fork oil (determine what spec fork oil you require and how much you require)
Make sure you understand the torque specifications before reassembling the vehicle.
Other fork replaceable items, such as shims, circlips, and so on, are optional. You don’t have to replace these, but you should if your bike has seen a lot of use.
And if you’ve been meaning to replace your springs and valves, now is the time!
Most motorcycles intended for street use have little benefit from suspension upgrades.
However, if you plan on riding your motorcycle hard or racing it, now is the time to upgrade to a better model.
Valve replacement is usually the most significant improvement you can make to your front suspension. If you have basic damping rod forks, upgrading to cartridges or gold valves is common.
Springs โ If you’re particularly heavy (or light), or if your bike has a lot of miles on it (> 100,000 km… not just age), your springs may need to be replaced.
Even if your valves and springs are fine, springs and cartridges from an advanced vendor (such as hlins) are a good idea if you’re changing the purpose of your motorcycle (for example, rebuilding it for the track).
What tools are required to change fork oil?
The first tool you’ll need is a way to support the motorcycle’s fork (you can’t lift the front wheel with a paddock stand… you’ll need to remove it!)
Front head lift stand โ used to raise the front of a motorcycle. Other methods of lifting the front include using a tie-down fastener under the triple tree and secured to the roof or a ladder.
Paddock stand or other device to keep the rear wheel in place
Fork seal driver for your fork size โ 43mm for my CBR600F, for example. (Alternatively, you can use an old fork seal and a block of wood to drive it in place, or you can use a PVC pipe of the appropriate diameter.)
Oil level gauge syringe with fork
You will also require some common tools.
If you have a metric bike, use metric wrenches.

A small screwdriver is required to lift the boot and remove the clips.
A few large sockets or wrenches, for example, to undo the top of the fork seals and the axle (I needed a 22mm and a 24mm, for example)
How difficult is it to change your own fork oil and seals?
In general, working on motorcycle forks is a moderately difficult task for anyone who is used to having parts of their motorcycles in pieces.
If the following do not frighten you,
Making use of a torque wrench
Performing incremental testing to ensure that everything is in order
Using a shop manual
Taking notes Degreasing parts with degreasing spray
Putting on rubber glovesรน
Then I believe changing fork oil and seals is within your capabilities!
The first time I did it, I was only concerned with removing the forks for repair. That was the simple part. The most difficult part, I discovered, was cleaning the fork tube of its pitting. I took it to a mechanic to have it checked… and he advised me to get new tubes. As a result, I was forced to leave my motorcycle on those stands for a few days.
Finally, reassembling requires caution because you must ensure
- You put everything back in its proper place.
- You used the correct amount of fork oil (and that it was evenly distributed between the fork legs)
- Everything is properly installed.
- You torque everything back to its original specifications.
There’s a lot to keep track of. But it is entirely possible if you exercise caution.
