Do not hesitate to contact us with any questions or requests. We are here to help you make your vehicle perfect. When I buy a motorcycle (or help a friend buy one), I always look up the motorcycle maintenance schedule if I don’t know it off the top of my head.

Knowing the entire maintenance schedule, I can spice up the negotiation. Instead of asking, “Has it recently been serviced?” I can ask, “Has it had its MAJOR service done at 26600 miles?” I’m hoping for a sheepish shake of the head. (In all honesty, I rarely bargain hard. But knowing this information also helps to demonstrate my seriousness.)

However, any conscientious bike owner will tell you that they maintain their bikes in their own unique way. They may change the oil frequently, always change the filter, and never check the valves because it does not appear to be necessary.

Then, if you consult the maintenance schedule for a motorcycle in the manual, you’ll notice line items you never expected to see, such as checking the “evaporative emissions canister” or regularly setting the idle speed, things that don’t really seem necessary (and definitely not that often). What’s going on?

So, after a lot of reading, practicing, and trying to figure out what goes into making a maintenance schedule, I thought I’d share my thoughts on what the most important motorcycle maintenance tasks are.

How to use this advice on Motorcycle Maintenance

Like most readers of this website, I admit that the more I learn, the more I realize how much I still need to learn. So I may revise this over time, and I welcome feedback and input.

This advice also applies to regular motorcycle use, such as daily commuting, weekend fun, and possibly a couple of track days a year (which may affect tyre life but will not destroy your bike).

Obviously, if you’re on a race team, you’ll have a much more rigorous schedule, which is beyond my comprehension.

In this analysis, I hope to highlight:

Things that aren’t as important as you think (Does it really need to be changed that frequently?)
Things that are more important than you realize (perhaps it’s time to sync the carbs…)
Things you didn’t realize you needed to do (even if you haven’t ridden the bike in ages)

And, of course, even if you maintain your bike properly, things can go wrong.

Even if you maintain your old bike properly, the following items are prone to failure:

Pumps for fuel
Starter relays, starters
Radiators and coolant pumps
Bearings (or at least notchiness) (or at least notchiness)
Components of suspension (leaky forks, etc.)
Heads of cylinders

The list goes on and on. The passage of time cannot be stopped.

Where do Motorcycle Maintenance Schedules / Service Intervals Come From?

If you ask anyone on a car or motorcycle forum (mental health note: don’t), you’ll get two opposing views on service intervals:

Motorcycle service intervals are overly conservative in manuals because manufacturers have a “cover your ass” policy and/or are in bed with fluids manufacturers (note: they normally do have an agreement with a recommended supplier, e.g. Ducati hearts Shell)
Motorcycle service intervals are too long in manuals, and a conscientious owner should change the oil and other items much more frequently just for “peace of mind.”

But there’s got to be more to it than that. After poring over hundreds of motorcycle manuals, I couldn’t help but wonder: Where do these motorcycle maintenance schedules come from?

When creating a model’s maintenance schedule, manufacturers, in my opinion, don’t do a lot of model-specific research.

What I want to believe is that when Honda releases their latest superbike, they punish 100 engines or thousands of components, employing various maintenance regimes, and hone in on the optimal time to perform valve services and oil changes to maximize life. Aside from the fact that this sounds prohibitively expensive, evidence suggests that they do not do so.

Maintenance schedules appear to be written according to a template for most motorcycles of a general class from one manufacturer (e.g. “Honda modern-ish liquid cooled”), and then very slightly modified — for example, shaft vs. chain drive.

There are several reasons why it appears that manufacturers create maintenance schedules from templates.

To summarize:

Many motorcycles within a brand have similar maintenance schedules.
The required service intervals of a bike within a brand change from time to time with no other changes.
Maintenance schedules for very similar motorcycles (for example, middleweight vs. middleweight or superbike vs. superbike) from different brands can vary dramatically.
Some brands have different maintenance schedules in Europe and the United States, but the majority do not.

More information is provided below.

To begin, most motorcycle manuals from the same manufacturer are nearly identical.

I don’t just mean different GSX-R600 years. Or the GSX-R600 versus the GSX-R750. That is, a manufacturer will issue a nearly identical service schedule for a variety of motorcycles.

For example, nearly every liquid-cooled Yamaha motorcycle from the last 20 years has a valve service interval of 26600 miles in US manuals and 40000 km in Europe / APAC manuals. This applies to a variety of two-, three-, and four-cylinder engines.

Going deeper, the maintenance schedule for the Yamaha MT-07 (a 689 cc parallel twin middleweight) and the Yamaha YZF-R1 (a 4-cylinder superbike) both share nearly every element, including (from the US manual; Europe is slightly different):

  • Change oil every 4000 mile / 6000 km or 6 months
  • Change spark plugs every 8000 miles / 12000 km or year
  • Check valves 26600 mile / 42000 km valve service interval, as mentioned above

You can make similar observations looking at manuals for other brands. Below are screenshots of the maintenance schedules from the 2019 Honda CBR500R (a mildly-tuned commuter sportbike) and the 2019 Honda CBR1000RR (a highly-tuned sportbike that has twice the cylinders and capacity, four times the power, and eight times the “Zounds!” factor).

These come from the 2019 manuals for each courtesy of Honda’s website. Spot the differences!

The Maintenance Schedule — What exactly do you need to do? - Motorcycle mechanic - Racext 3

Second, the maintenance requirements of a single class of vehicles within a brand can change abruptly and for no apparent reason.

This happens infrequently, but it has occurred.

Everyone knew that the service interval for most Ducati motorcycles was 6000 miles / 10000 km back in the 2000s. It suddenly changed to 7500 miles / 12000 km in the middle of the decade (between 2006-2007 for at least the models I’ve seen). There was no sudden advancement in engine technology during that time period.

Third, the service intervals for seemingly similar bikes from different manufacturers — say, two parallel twin middleweights like the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Yamaha MT-07 — differ.

Yes, the bikes and engines are from different manufacturers. However, they are built on similar budgets and produce very similar power and torque. However, the oil change and valve service intervals are vastly different.

True, they’re different engines from different manufacturers… But how different could these bikes’ service requirements be?

Finally, the maintenance intervals for the same motorcycle (or car) vary by region, most notably between Europe/APAC and the US.

Yamaha is one of the companies that does this; for many bikes, they recommend six-month or 4000-mile service intervals in the United States, and 12 month or 10000 km (about 6000 mile) service intervals in Europe and Asia. Why? I’d love to find out.

Most other motorcycle brands follow the same regional guidelines. However, I’ve noticed significant differences in globally distributed cars.

So, in reality, a manufacturer’s motorcycle maintenance schedule is mostly built from a template. They follow a standard schedule and make adjustments based on the individual bike, such as whether it’s liquid- or air-cooled, chain-, shaft-, or belt-driven, and a few other factors. That’s all.

The Effect on the Upkeep of Safety and Emissions Regulations

Emissions and safety regulations have a significant impact on motorcycle maintenance requirements. These mostly add line items to the maintenance schedule. In many cases, the order of the schedule is changed.

Long ago, the first item on any maintenance schedule was “Change the motor oil.” However, for decades, many brands have first mentioned emissions-related issues.

Every modern motorcycle maintenance schedule includes a number of items that you may not recognize but that require attention. These are some examples:

Control device for evaporative emissions, also known as a carbon canister
Hoses for crankcase breathers (not every jurisdiction)
System of backup air supply (a.k.a. the PAIR system)
The spark arrester (mostly US)
These items exist because regulations require them in order for a bike to pass emissions tests. The evap device keeps evaporated fuel from being released into the atmosphere. The crankcase breather prevents engine oil from being simply cast off into the air. The secondary air supply system aids in the combustion of unburned fuel in the exhaust. And using a spark arrestor, as you do, helps to prevent forest fires.

Many motorcycle owners actually remove these items. Gasp! It is somewhat dependent on how you intend to use your bike. On a daily commuter, I’d leave an evap canister, but not on a track bike or a stripped-down cafe racer that just sits around looking pretty.

Furthermore, there are some requirements in manuals that are related to emissions but aren’t as explicit as a whole separate unit dedicated to emissions reduction. These include things like

Examine the idle speed — obviously, a fast idle reduces overall emissions in city driving. However, on modern fuel-injected motorcycles, the idle speed rarely varies.
Examining the exhaust for leaks. Yes, it can leak, but you don’t have to check it at every service.
Again, adjusting fuel injection sync is worthwhile after a long period of time or after modifications, but doing so at every service is excessive.
Spark plug inspection and replacement Many DIY mechanics clean and gap their own plugs. However, manuals recommend replacing them these days. The manual even states that replacing the spark plugs is necessary for maintaining low emissions levels.
Third, there are some safety precautions that manuals recommend — but most mechanics would disagree that you must adhere to such a strict schedule.

These schedules state that you must: every four (usually) years:

Brake lines should be replaced.
Fuel lines should be replaced.
Replace the rubber components of the brake master cylinders and calipers.
Those rubber parts tend to deteriorate over time, especially if you leave your bike parked in the hot sun all year.

However, most motorcycle owners, particularly bike enthusiasts reading this website, cover their bikes or park them in a garage away from the sun. Your rubber parts will most likely outlast four years.

Finally, there are a few things that are labeled as emissions-related but that you should probably do anyway. These include things like

Valve inspection
While you’re at it, double-check the spark plugs.
Taking off the fairings and tank (where necessary) every 30-40000 km (18-25000 miles) and ensuring that everything is in working order. However, many business owners fail to do so.

The only caveat to the preceding items is that mechanics usually tell me that even the above valve service intervals on most motorcycles are too conservative — valves on Japanese motorcycles, in particular, rarely need adjusting (and even less after the first service), and when they do, an experienced mechanic will usually know because of audible valve chatter.

(A caveat to the caveat: valve clearances have a greater impact on a desmodromic system because there are twice as many valves and thus twice as many opportunities for an out-of-spec valve to cause pressure loss.)

So, what remains? What maintenance is actually required? Let us take a look.

Motorcycle Maintenance that you Actually Have to Do

I (and many other motorcycle owners) divide motorcycle maintenance into five categories.

Everyday checks — Chain (if you have one), as well as safety and obvious flaws
Minor service consists of changing the oil and filter, greasing, and performing a safety inspection.
The Major Service consists of valves, plugs, and an air filter.
Replacement at regular intervals (fluids, rubber parts)
Long-term Lubrication
Everyday audits
These are the steps you take to ensure your bike is safe to ride. Many of these are self-evident. Usually, I notice if one of them is wrong within the first few seconds to a minute of riding.

Perform the following checks / items of service on a daily basis — or before each ride.

.

Motorcycle maintenance everyday checks
Check fluid levels — oil, brake, clutch (if hydraulic)
Check oil visually system for leaks (i.e. are there drips on the garage floor?)
Check cooling system for leaks (ditto, drips)
Check that the clutch and brakes work and have the right play, and aren’t leaking
Check the condition of the tires (enough tread, no major damage)
Check the condition of the wheels
Check the sprockets — no rounding / shark toothing
Check the suspension — no weeping. (Especially by you, if you discover it to be weeping)
If chain: Check the chain tension and lubrication condition (adjust tension / grease it if necessary)
If shaft: Check no leaks in final drive
Make sure all the lights work, including the rear brake light
Everyday checks for motorcycles

It is critical to inspect for leaks. Even the best machines leak. Hayes calipers on the legendary BMW S 1000 RR and R 1250 GS were recalled and replaced with Nissin units.

Minor assistance (the Oil Change)

A minor service is typically performed between 3000-8000 miles / 5000-12000 km OR every six to twelve months.

Yes, those are both significant ranges. It partly depends on how much you ride and the conditions in which you store and ride your motorcycle.

The only major disadvantage of having too many oil changes is the expense and waste of oil, which cannot be thrown away.

Pro tip: You can properly dispose of your oil by taking it to any mechanic’s workshop. In theory, they could charge you a small fee, but I’ve never seen this happen.

But how frequently should you change the oil? Owners’ contradictory opinions can be found here.

While some motorcycle owners on forums believe that most items on a maintenance schedule are overly conservative, others say they prefer to change the oil more frequently. I’m not sure why, other than adoration for their prized machines and confirmation bias (“I do it, and it still works!”).

(I believe it has something to do with considering our machines to be living beings and wanting to give them clean, fresh blood to run through their veins…)

However, I believe it is easier to be consistent and assume motorcycle manufacturers are conservative with everything on the schedule, including oil change intervals. So I don’t see why I should do it more frequently (unless I’m tracking the bike).

Your minor service is to perform all of the daily checks listed above, as well as the items listed below.

.

Minor service
Clean the bike, run it until its warm and check it for leaks
Change the oil
Change the oil filter (some do this every 2 services)
Check the air filter, clean or replace if necessary (e.g. if you’ve ridden a lot in dust/rain)
Grease major external parts — side stand, center stand
Lubricate controls (levers and pedals) and cables
Adjust the play in the brake and clutch levers
Check the bearings for notchiness / play
Check the brake pads
Check the safety equipment does what it should
– brake lever / pedal activates brake light
– flasher does flash the high beam
– kickstand kills the engine (unless you’ve bypassed it and know what you’re doing!)
If chain: Check the chain condition, and replace if necessary
If belt: Check the belt condition / tension
Motorcycle Minor serviceYou don’t have to change the brake fluid or the coolant as part of a minor service unless the time has come (see below).Significant assistanceMy BMW R nineT with the tank removed for reasons other than the valves that protrude from the sides. Let me count the ways in which I adore this bike.

Oh, the important service. A cold wind sweeps across the dark tundra, raising the hair on the back of your neck. Which of the two will it be this time? A thousand dollars or a weekend in the workshop, plus or minus?

Do the minor service and daily checks, as well as the items listed below, for the major service.

Major service items
Check valve clearances and adjust if necessary
Sync carbs / throttle bodies if needed (some bikes have them on cable and far apart)
Check spark plug condition. Replace if necessary (modern manuals don’t recommend cleaning and gapping, for emissions reasons)
Replace the air filter (unless you did so recently)
Motorcycle major service items

The valve service is the most important. The ease with which the cylinder heads and valves can be accessed, the frequency with which adjustments are required, and the ease with which the adjustments can be made determine how annoying this task is.

On an old air-cooled desmodromic V-twin, for example, the heads must be cracked every 6000 miles / 10000 km. Then there’s the rear head, which is a pain to get to and is a shim-and-bucket type, so it’s a frustrating exercise, and if I wanted to do that kind of exercise, I’d go back to CrossFit.

On the other hand, if you have a modern liquid-cooled thumper, you’ll rarely need to adjust it, and doing so is simple.

Because the fairings and tank are removed to access the engine (unless you have that dirt bike… or a Honda Grom, or a transversely mounted engine like on my R nineT or Moto Guzzi motorcycles), this is also a good time to replace hoses.

Periodic replacement items

Unfortunately, some motorcycle parts deteriorate with time rather than use (hours of operation).

The majority of these are fluids and rubber parts. They wear out faster if you ride your bike hard or if you live in a harsh climate, such as one that is extremely hot, and if you park your bike outside.

Item to change Every
Brake fluid (and clutch fluid if you have it) 2 years
Coolant (if liquid-cooled) 2-3 years
Brake hoses / fuel lines 4 years
Timing belt (Ducati) 2-5 years
Alternator belt (BMW, Moto Guzzi) 6 years
Periodic change of things that deteriorate

These recommendations are taken from motorcycle manuals and are all conservative for everyday use.

If you only ride your bike to work or on weekends, brake fluid will last much longer than two years. It is safe to change it when you buy the bike and every two years after that. However, many owners who only commute forget to do it for years and may only change the fluid when it becomes too mushy.

And many motorcycles use “super long life” coolant, which is typically an OAT or a HOAT with few inorganic compounds. In car engines, such coolants can last for ten years without needing to be replaced. Suzuki manuals typically state that if you use their super long life coolant, you can change the coolant every four years.

See our complete coolant guide, which includes information on OAT, IAT, and HOAT coolants (and lots of other stuff).

Changing your brake hoses every four years, on the other hand, is very conservative for the average motorcycle enthusiast who keeps their bike under a cover in a garage. Yes, if you leave your UberEATS delivery CB125e outside all the time, the brake hoses should be replaced every four years. Otherwise, maybe take it easy on that one.

Some manuals recommend fork oil, while others do not. Ducati and other manufacturers of high-performance motorcycles have manuals that do.

Belts — your Ducati’s timing belt is made of the same material as a BMW or Moto Guzzi alternator belt (presumably, they feel the same and attach to the same things). However, the timing belt on your Ducati snapping is far more serious. It will result in bent valves, which will necessitate costly repairs.

If your alternator belt (if you have one) fails, you may not notice it until your battery light illuminates when the voltage drops below a certain level or your bike fails to start. Hopefully, you discover it before it’s too late.

Long-Term Maintenance

Finally, many manuals suggest performing these tasks every 50000 km (30000 miles).

Because this is such a long distance, and because bikes frequently change hands with incomplete service histories, these items are frequently overlooked. As a result, bearings, suspension components, and the final drive fail more frequently than they should.

.

Long-term greasing / fluid changes
Grease wheel bearings
Grease the steering bearings
Grease swingarm pivot bearings
Change fork oil (see notes)
Change final drive fluid (if shaft drive)
Change the chain and sprockets (see notes below)
Motorcycle long-term maintenance

The forks are one of those maintenance items that wear based on distance traveled rather than hours of engine usage.

Some manuals, such as those of BMW (a model with telescopic forks) and Ducati, recommend changing the fork oil every 30000 km / 18000 miles. Although most manuals do not specify it, this appears to be a reasonable interval.

Depending on the type of bike and how it’s ridden, the chain and sprockets will wear differently. It will worsen if the chain is not adjusted and goes out of specification.

I’ve read in some street bike manuals that they should be changed every 40000 kilometers. It’s somewhere in this order of magnitude with normal street use.

What can go wrong anyway?

Even if you maintain your motorcycle properly, some parts will fail.

In general, I’ve had (or heard of) the following failing on old motorcycles:

Stator coils can fail, usually destroying the regulator/rectifier (see my electrical system troubleshooting guide).
Fork seals could fail — This is quite common, especially if your stanchions are rusted (which also happens with time).
Tank may rust — This happens over time and with humidity, especially if ethanol-blended fuel is left in the tank for an extended period of time, which will destroy the fuel filter.
The cooling system could fail due to a faulty pump, which could be caused by contaminated coolant (made worse by not changing it often enough, or throwing in the wrong spec coolant)
Brakes may warp — You’ll have to replace your brake discs at some point.

All of this assumes you don’t crash the bike!

I should write a separate article about what to expect to spend money on when purchasing an old bike. Yes, that increasingly classic Yamaha TRX850 is appealing, but I must be willing to pay the price!
