After a lengthy apprenticeship in the lower series of motor racing, he was given the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut in 1994, driving a Simtek. In the top flight, he is remembered most for two strange accidents: one in Monte Carlo and the other in Hungary, where he was hit by a rescue car after getting out of his stationary car due to a fire. He only reported a concussion in the first case, and he was unharmed in the second.
Most Formula One insiders regard him as one of the least talented drivers who has ever driven a Formula One car.
The first steps
Inoue, the son of a wealthy slot machine tycoon, began his career by competing in local races in Japan. However, in 1987, he decided to relocate to England and enrolled in Jim Russell’s driving school in Snetterton. The experience was not easy, due to linguistic difficulties as well as the fact that the Japanese did not know the circuits he would have to face. Despite this, he managed to complete a full season in the British Formula Ford championship1600 in 1988. The driver intended to switch to English F3, but the team he was racing for demanded $ 625,000 to back him up. Due to a lack of funds, Inoue was forced to return to Japan, where he competed in several national Formula 3 championships without ever achieving notable results.
He was able to return to Europe in 1994 and compete in the Formula 3000 championship with the Super Nova team. While his teammate Vincenzo Sospiri was battling for the championship, the Japanese driver was frequently in mid-table positions and never managed to score any points.
Formula One in 1994
Despite this, he was able to contact various Formula 1 teams, particularly those in financial difficulty and in need of drivers, thanks to the financial resources at his disposal. After conducting interviews with Larrousse, Footwork, and Lotus, Simtek decided to entrust him with one of their cars for the Japanese Grand Prix after a test in Barcelona with Sospiri. [1] The English team’s assessment, on the other hand, was heavily reliant on Inoue’s financial resources. [1] The Japanese driver still qualified, but his race was cut short after three laps due to aquaplaning.
1995
During free practice for the Monaco Grand Prix, Inoue’s car was hit by a tow truck, making him the victim of an unusual accident.
He agreed to race with Footwork instead for the 1995 season. The contract stipulated by the driver called for a total payment of four and a half million dollars to compete in the entire championship. To obtain the funds he required, he used various legal maneuvers and took advantage of the fact that money transfers were not taxed in Switzerland as they were in other countries. However, his results were very disappointing, and he was frequently beaten by teammate Morbidelli.
In Monaco, he was the victim of an unusual accident: forced to stop along the way due to a broken brake pedal, he requested that the tow truck transport him to the pits in his car. He chose not to remove his helmet, but he also did not fasten his seat belts. At the same time, the safety car, driven by Jean Ragnotti, was passing on the track and collided with the single-seater being towed, throwing the driver out. Inoue suffered a concussion but was not injured further because he did not remove his helmet.
He finished a race for the first time at the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing ninth. In Hungary, he was the victim of a new accident: after a harmless withdrawal due to engine failure, Inoue pulled over to the side of the track and ran to get a fire extinguisher to put out the beginnings of a fire on his car, but was run over, albeit at a low speed, by the car of the marshals who intervened to move the car, resulting in any case unharmed. He finished eighth in the Italian Grand Prix, his best career result, and he held provisional pole position for several minutes in the Portuguese Grand Prix on Friday.
1996
Meanwhile, Inoue was negotiating a steering wheel for 1996 with various teams, including Ligier and Sauber. In the end, he appeared to have reached an agreement with Minardi, but one of his sponsors, Unimat, decided not to support him, effectively ending his Formula 1 career.
