We are here to help you make your vehicle perfect.Karl Jochen Rindt never imagined that fate was going to take more things from him than it was going to give him. Since childhood he suffered the absence of his parents (who died in the middle of the bombing of World War II in Germany) when he was only 15 months old. Under the upbringing of his maternal grandparents, he moved to Graz, where they made him adopt Austrian nationality.

Rindt grew up with a very strong, rebellious personality and it was very rare to see him with a smile. All this was increasing, since during his childhood and youth his grandparents granted him all his whims so that the lack of his parents would not be noticed. So it was that by an almost shouting request from him, he had his first Jaguar Sport with which he began his sports campaign. At Goodwood, he felt the pleasure of speed, of uncertainty, on top of his car, and he decided with all his heart that he would spend the rest of his life as a racer.

It was in his country that he achieved his first triumphs aboard an Alfa Romeo Giuletta TI 1300, but more importantly, his name began to resonate throughout the automobile environment. In 1963 he decided to try his luck with monopostos and thanks to the help of Barry Bland he competed in Formula Junior.

After Bland’s death, Rindt became the team’s first driver and his performances increasingly captured the attention of the public, who saw Jochen as a great driver. One of those moments was at Cristal Palace where he beat none other than Graham Hill. But the more confidence he took with the world of motorsports, the more he made his personality stand out and threw thick ammunition against anyone. That was when he found out that the British called him “Australian”. Enraged, he replied that “the English are so foolish that they cannot believe that a good pilot is not an Australian.” He also had the luxury of rejecting a good offer that Rod Walker had made him to integrate him into his Formula 1 team and another from Ferrari for the World Sport Championship. Nevertheless,
His beginnings were not as expected since in his debut, no less than in Austria, he had to leave when he was piloting a Brabham-BRM. His dropouts weren’t always due to mechanical problems, but many times he dropped out of his own free will when he saw that he couldn’t score points. “For me it makes no sense to continue on the track if I no longer have the chance to win,” he added on several occasions. On weekends he competed with the F-2 and for his repeated triumphs he earned the nickname “King of Formula 2”. In 1964 he won, together with his teammate Masten Gregory, the 24 Hours of LeMans. His great leap was when he arrived at the Lotus team, when he was summoned by Colin Chapman to occupy the seat of the late Jim Clark. His change did not change his way of thinking and when he had to criticize his team he did it without mincing words, something that with other pilots did not happen. Jochen Rindt took his first victory in the Watkins Glen race, but there was almost no celebration because Graham Hill, his teammate, had suffered fractures to both of his legs in an accident. Then came the triumphs in Monaco, Holland, France, England and Germany.

1970 had to be his year and that is why Chapman put the magnificent Lotus 72 at his service. “Things are going so well for me, it scares me,” he once confessed to those closest to him. And fate seemed to prove him right when a few days before (precisely at the Austrian Grand Prix) he had to leave because the engine of his car had broken. But September 4 was when he came face to face with death. His Lotus made an inexplicable pirouette when approaching the Monza Parabolic curve, at more than 170 km / h. After a zigzag at the time of braking, the mistake began with the subsequent impact head-on against the retaining fences, and the return to the track. Bernie Ecclestone, his friend and his manager understood what happened when he saw that Rindt did not get out of the car. Upon arriving at the scene, he saw him unconscious and bleeding. An ambulance immediately took him to the Monza hospital, but to no avail. Jochen Rindt had passed away.

Theories of the accident were many, but none was clear enough. Chapman had to face a big trial, until the fault was placed on the manufacturer of the broken axle head.

The championship continued its march and the Belgian Jacky Ickx – who drove a Ferrari and had won in Canada – was close to the title. But it was just wishful thinking as at Watkins Glen Emerson Fittipaldi, in a Lotus similar to Rindt’s, won the race. Automatically, on October 4, Karl Jochen Rindt became Formula 1’s first post-mortem champion.
