From a young age he thought of means of transport that were powered by engines and not by animals, so he began to experiment with 2-wheel vehicles. Years later, by raising some capital, he manages to join forces to open a mechanical workshop, and the following year he married Bertha Ringer, a woman who was an important part of his achievements as an inventor. Unfortunately this business did not prosper and he went under.

This failure helped him to work on engine development, an idea he had had since his years of study. It is then in 1878 when he manages to develop a 2-stroke internal combustion engine; seven years later he builds a tricycle that made him famous, since it had a single-cylinder engine and 0.88 horsepower.

In the first tests that were done to this engine in Munich, things did not go as he expected, which caused ridicule among those who watched the practices. Even so, he achieved patent number 37435 Motorwagen model (vehicle with 3 wheels, light weight and capable of reaching 15 km/h) as the creator of the first vehicle capable of moving with an internal combustion engine.

So the first step was taken. With the patent in hand, the next step was to continue developing and evolving. First of all, Benz borrowed the 4-stroke engine improvement experiences in 1884 from Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Haybech. One of those changes that Benz applied to what Daimler had already done was to create not only the engine, but also a suitable chassis for it; it is incredible to think that the company of Benz and Daimler would merge in the future, but their founders never met.

It is good to point out, and as a very curious fact, that Daimler never wanted to drive a car, and even worse was his death, which occurred due to the disorders caused by a trip made in one of his vehicles, sometimes life is very ironic, No?

Later, another momentous event occurs in this story, which was the discovery of a hydrocarbon of great energy importance, which was called benzine. Its discoverer was Eilhard Milscherlich. This hydrocarbon over time would become the ideal fuel for motor vehicles or cars. By 1886, Benz cars were ready to go on sale, the problem was that at that time there were not many people who could afford a vehicle, much less if reliability was still in question, first because the vehicle was uncomfortable. and unstable, the publicity did not favor them and having no possible clients, there were not many possibilities to trade either, and here comes into play the third and last event that solved Benz’s problems, the help and support of his wife, Bertha.

Seeing that her husband’s invention was not trustworthy among the Germans, she decided to make a trip with her 2 children between the cities of Mannheim and Pforzheim with about 100 km of travel on a road in a deplorable state, where she had to push the car on the climbs and even fill the fuel tank by itself. She still managed to finish the tour at dusk that same day, and marked history as the first long car trip on record.

Benz then merged with Daimler, renamed Daimler&Benz in 1926 and would later become Mercedes&Benz. The car won successive races, and had his daughter’s name painted on the hood.
