He participated in Formula One from 1966 to 1979, in which he raced for Tyrrell, Cooper, Ferrari, Brabham, McLaren, Williams, Lotus, Wolf, Ensign and Ligier, but his greatest successes were achieved with Ferrari.
Ickx participated in 116 Grands Prix, in which he won eight, six with Ferrari and two with Brabham, obtained thirteen “Pole Position”, eleven with Ferrari and two with Brabham, scored 181 points and fourteen fastest laps. He was on the podium 25 times and led 19 Grands Prix for 529 laps in total.

This Belgian pilot had great talent, he had the coldness of Rindt and he was a real master in the water, he was emerging as a World Champion, but he did not become like that because, in large part, he was having single-seaters every time less competitive. However, he had the opportunity to be Champion in 1970, but could not overcome the ill-fated Jochen Rindt in the table.
The son of a motor journalist, Jacky began his career on motorcycles, being a three-time Belgian trial champion, but after switching to four wheels, he was soon the man to beat in a national championship in which he participated with a Lotus. Curtain in 1965.
Ken Tyrrell saw in this young man his natural talent, and entrusted him with one of his F2 cars to participate in the German GP. But it was the following year that Ickx caused a sensation by qualifying his Tyrrell third. Despite the fact that he later started from further back, he managed to climb up to fourth position until he had to retire due to suspension, but not before setting the fastest lap between the F2. In this same year, 1967, John Cooper entrusted one of the F1 to him, and he managed to finish sixth in the Italian GP.
He only raced two GPs with Cooper and Ferrari signed him for 1968. By then, Ickx was considered one of the best endurance drivers, having won races like the Spa 1000 km and other races at Brands Hatch, Watkins Glen or Kyalami. .

In 1968 he got his first victory in F1, it was the French GP held in Rouen.
He achieved several good results that allowed him to be a contender for the Championship, but in the penultimate race, the Canadian GP held in St. Jovite, he had an accident that broke his leg, with which his chances of being Champion vanished. He finished fourth in the Championship.
For 1969 he would be in Brabham, the year in which he won two races and finished second in the Championship, the most remarkable thing about this great driver this season was his victory over Jackie Stewart at the Nürburgring, a circuit in which he started from pole the previous year and was defeated by Jackie in hellish conditions; on a circuit like the Nürburgring, with thick fog and rain, a whole display from the Scotsman, but this year it would be the Belgian who emerged victorious and incidentally got the first of his four hat-tricks. In addition, he scored a magnificent victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans beating Herrmann’s Porsche alongside Jackie Oliver in a Ford.
In 1970 he returned to Ferrari, while still participating in endurance races. That year he was second again in F1, he was unable to take advantage of Rindt dying with four races remaining in the Championship, and the Austrian died not knowing he would be World Champion.
In 1971 and 72 he continued to race for Ferrari, but by then the Scuderia was unable to offer him a car with which to be Champion and he finished fourth in the Championship in both years, despite taking wins at Zandvoort and a non-scoring GP at Hockenheim. in honor of Rindt in 1971 and another victory at the Nürburgring in ’72, as well as continuing to win races outside of F1, at Daytona, Sebring, Brand Hatch…
In 1973 the situation was even worse, Ferrari was no longer competitive that year and tried his luck for the German GP driving a McLaren, with which he was third, and in the United States GP he drove a Williams with which he would be seventh. He finished ninth in the Championship.
1974 was another disastrous year, except for victory in the Race of Champions, the year in which he drove an undrivable Lotus 76 alternating with a better running 72E, alongside Ronnie Peterson. He was tenth in the Championship.
In 1975 he only scored 3 points for Lotus and left mid-season. At least that year he won the Le Mans 24 Hours again, in a Gulf Mirage alongside Bell.
In ’76 he ran for Williams, Wolf and Ensign without scoring a single point, a terrible accident at Watkins Glen made him see that it was better to concentrate his career on endurance competitions since then. He won the 24 Hours again in a Porsche alongside Van Lenep.
From ’77 to ’79 he was on the grid at some GPs, but he always focused on endurance racing.
Jacky Ickx will always be remembered as one of the greatest endurance drivers in history, apart from achieving many victories in this field, he holds the record for victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, achieving 6 (1969, 75, 76, 77, 81 and 82). But all those who knew him in his golden years of F1 will also remember him as one of the greatest talents of all time.
