Hello, and Welcome to Racext’s Moto Magazine column, the column aimed exclusively at the world of 2-wheeled vehicles with news, insights and guides, available every day here ru racext.com, today in this article we will talk about “How can you afford to travel the world by motorbike?”
How can you afford to travel the world by motorbike?
If there’s one question I’ve heard more than any other, it’s “How is it possible for these round-the-world riders to take off for months and years without having to work?”
Are they all independently rich? Does Instagram give them free money to be an influencer? Do they have trust funds? Pensions? Or some other income stream that is unattainable for most ordinary people?
How do you budget for long-term travel?
While some bikers have retired or rented properties or other guaranteed income they can count on each month, and I’m sure there are a handful of lucky ones who earn some money as an influencer, if you’re not in a place in life for having that kind of organization, long-term travel is still fully achievable. Although I warn you: there will be sacrifices.
Using my life as an example, I didn’t even have these things. I grew up with a single mom, four siblings and an absent drug addict father in a slum area of โโLos Angeles. I couldn’t afford to go to college, so I immediately went to work after high school with a job testing video games, where I was barely earning more than the minimum wage. I worked many hours and saved and saved every penny I could, then a decade later I was living alone with a motorcycle in my shared garage and had earned up to โฌ 55,000 a year in salary.
& nbsp;
It might not seem like a dancer job for the most part, certainly not in LA, but from my benchmark, I was doing more than I ever knew so I was able to put thousands of dollars aside in bank at a rate of a few hundred dollars a month. I never got into any debt, bought old vehicles that I could buy outright, and I didn’t drink, party, or go out to eat. It goes without saying that, due to my upbringing, budget was an obsessive part of my life. I always had to choose between the things I wanted and the things I needed.
In my case, racing or riding my motorcycle almost always won over a sumptuous vacation, the newest gadgets, the most imaginative cars or the most organic products. So when I lost that job, and was staring at a map and my Yamaha FZ-07, it became my chance of a lifetime to, well, blow my savings into a trip of a lifetime.
And that’s it. This is my secret. No debt and money saving. Crazy, right? But this is as complicated as it gets.
My first trip, I saved around โฌ 30,000 in a decade. This took me, and eventually a partner, to 49 states in the United States, 32 states in Mexico, three provinces in Canada and all the way to the bottom of Panama and back for about two years.
To live on the street full time, I gave up having my own apartment and went back at the end of my savings, scrambling for work and living outside my tent until I could get an apartment again. It was extremely stressful, sure, but it was a useful exchange. This is one of those sacrifices you need to be ready to handle.
Then I did it again. I flew to Asia for several months and blew up my savings. Then I went back and did it again. I had to become familiar with flying without a safety net and trusting that it would always work. As long-term travelers, we rely on hope and serendipity, so I’ve simply believed in myself enough to know I’ll be able to make something work when the going gets tough.
Every two years, I have to stop and resume a normal job and save money to keep moving, but once I left it all behind once, it became incredibly easy to quit my job and leave into the sunset the second and the third time . Traveling changes your relationship with the American dream and your relationship with the value of your time.
& nbsp;
Do you work on the street?
I’m a fan of the go-all-in-no-plan approach, but sometimes you can even go to work while on the go. Obviously I’m a writer. I’ve written and recorded several books now, both non-fiction and non-fiction, and my book sales have helped ease the financial burden of life on the road. I also write freelance for magazines, which brings in small streams of income here and there. I wasn’t really a writer before I went on my first trip, but I started to find that I really liked it over the course of my travels.
So what is something you might like and do on the road? My partner did odd jobs by turning a wrench. I have known others who have stopped to help with crops or have used websites such as Workaway or AuPair, where they exchange labor for free housing and sometimes a small salary. If you’re lucky enough to be a full-time digital nomad with a conventional job that allows you to work remotely, there’s no reason you can’t hole up in one place during the week, so save your travels and explorations. for weekends.
& nbsp;
So how much does it cost by road?
There are some expenses you can’t avoid. Fuel, for example, costs what it costs. I’ve paid anywhere from โฌ 2 a gallon to โฌ 8. Luckily, motorcycles are mostly fuel-efficient, so in a 200-mile day, I usually spend around โฌ 30 on fuel for my FZ-07. Food varies by country, but eating out at a restaurant can cost anywhere from โฌ 5 to โฌ 20. Picking up simple foods like noodles and spinach and a canned salsa at the grocery store will often be closer to the โฌ 5 to โฌ 10 range. I also travel with a handful of toppings to spice up meals so they don’t get too boring.
For accommodation, if I can camp for free using BLM land or national forests when in the US, this is my go-to. If, for whatever reason, it’s not a good idea to camp (say in foreign countries or if the weather is too bad or if I desperately need a shower), depending on the country, the cheapest hotels or hostels are anywhere from โฌ 10 to โฌ 80 per night.
Fortunately, my bike requires little maintenance, but I always make sure to save money for consumable parts, like sprockets or tires.
Realistically, the total costs could average โฌ 50 to โฌ 100 per day, depending on the accommodation.
& nbsp;
Travel slowly
When I went on my first trip, I was always on the go. Wake up to the sun, travel 300 to 400 miles, set up camp, repeat. I would take a day to hike or tour here and there, but it wasn’t exactly relaxing.
Around the tenth month though, packing and moving every single day started to put a strain on my mental health, and I found myself wanting to take more breaks, stay a little longer in one place. , get to know some of these new people beyond introductory chatter and experience each destination a little more. If you’re not always on the go, you don’t buy gas every day. If you have a hostel with a kitchen, you can save a little to cook yourself. If you have a person willing to let you stay with them for free for a while (Bunk-a-Biker can be a good resource), you can use some of that money you’ve saved up for the sightseeing things you’ve always wanted to do. & nbsp;
It’s a constant give and take, but at least for me, I want to live on a tight budget without giving up everything. There’s a good balance between being thrifty and still having fun, and it’s easy to be so engrossed in saving money that you forget that this trip is more than just existing in different places in a confusion of campsites and new faces. For example, I definitely spent a full month’s budget learning how to scuba dive in Belize. But what’s the point of going to places you’ve never been if you can’t do the things that make them special?
Whatever your circumstances, if traveling the world on a motorcycle is something you really and truly want, you will find a way to make it work. It’s not for the faint of heart, and it’s rarely easy, but the extra work you put in to afford it will make it that much more fulfilling.
