We are here to help you make your vehicle perfect. When one is born into a family passionate about motorsports, it is very rare not to continue to be linked to that tradition. Emerson Fittipaldi rubbed shoulders with that world since he was a child, since his father, Wilson, was a great motorsports journalist and on numerous occasions accompanied his son to the races.

He gradually mixed with the world of speed and by the time he was five years old he was riding everywhere on his bicycle. He later opted for 50 cubic centimeter motorcycles, and then moved on to go-karts. It was precisely in one of these vehicles that at the age of 18 in his hometown, São Paulo, he won his first title. Years later, he and his brother built a Formula Vee car with a Volkswagen drive. In 1967 he was champion of the category.

They had liked all of this so much that shortly after they opened a business where they sold accessories for cars and go-karts and continued with the theme of construction. In 1967 he was runner-up in Gran Turismo with none other than one of his creations: a body that contained a 356 chassis and a Porsche 911 engine.

Two years later he traveled to Europe to try his luck in other categories, because he felt very capable of keeping up with the great riders. His success came to him quite quickly, since Jim Russell, who ran a pilot school, seeing his good performance, offered him to get on a Formula 3 Lotus 59.

And Russell showed that he had not been wrong in choosing him, since the Brazilian was champion that season. Already consecrated as a Formula 1 driver, he assured that his secret at that time was that “he used a little trick, which was to have narrower tires than my other teammates, since they gave me more speed when facing the straights.”

Because of his friendship with Russell, he met Colin Chapman, who did not hesitate to put him in a Formula 2 car, as a partner of none other than Jochen Rindt for the 1970 season. Emerson Fittipaldi was going to place himself third in the anteroom category that year. of Formula 1 and tenth, with 12 units, in the maximum. Another of the great masters who had his eyes on “Emmo” was Frank Williams, but the Brazilian did not want to go from one team to continue racing with Lotus, but this time in Formula 1.

After Rindt’s death he ceased to be the third pilot. Chapman made several changes and put the South American as the first driver while the Swedish Reine Wisell replaced John Miles. At Watkins Glen the order was to stop the Ferraris, so the late Rindt could win the championship. After a great race Emerson finished first, got his first win and made his remembered partner the only postmortem champion in history.

In 1971 he had a decent season – he finished sixth in the tournament with 16 points – which made him a candidate for the next one.

In ’72 the Lotus were as efficient and superior as the Tyrrell the previous year. And thanks to the triumphs in Spain, Belgium, Great Britain, Austria and Italy, Fittipaldi emerged as the first Brazilian to become champion of the highest category, surpassing nothing more and nothing less than the figure of those years: Jackie Stewart.

In 1973 he suffered an accident that caused an ankle injury, which reduced his chances of fighting for the title with the Scotsman. Despite this, he was runner-up and finished the season with three wins.

But the following year he took revenge and got the two-time championship, this time with McLaren, who offered the driver a good amount of money to change teams. This second title was more fought than the first: he beat Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) by only three points. This championship found him looser and more relaxed, but more technical than usual. In ’75 it seemed that he was going for the third title – he started the year with a win in Argentina -, however it was quite irregular and the one who got the glory was Niki Lauda. “Emmo” was again runner-up, with two wins in total.

He then announced that he was joining his own team project together with his brother Wilson Junior, which had been operating since 1975 under the auspices of Copersucar, a Brazilian state sugar company. However, the start was not as expected and he quickly lost any chance of fighting for another championship. His best season with his team was in 1978, when he finished ninth in the drivers’ tournament with 17 points and seventh in the Constructors’ Cup with the same number of units. His best race was the Brazilian Grand Prix, when he escorted the Ferrari Carlos Reutemann.

In 1980 he decided to stop running to dedicate himself to directing his team, after the separation with the Rio de Janeiro sugar company, but, in 1982, poor performance put an end to his adventure in the World Cup.

Resting in his country, he received an important invitation to race in the then Indy Car, today called CART, where he was always a permanent protagonist and benchmark. In that category he showed that he could still win and that is how he won the title in 1989. His two victories in the traditional Indianapolis 500 definitely consecrated him as an idol of motorsport.

He kept running until a very serious accident in Michigan caused fractures in the cervical vertebrae. Fittipaldi recovered and wanted to run again, but again an accident, this time with an ultralight car, left him with serious back injuries, which definitively kept him from car racing. However, that did not overshadow the achievements obtained in the past and deservedly got his place in the history of Formula 1. That history that will say that it was he who started the path of successful Brazilians in the maximum. The one who will say that it was he who started the path of successful Brazilians in North American motorsports. Nothing more, nothing less…
