Since childhood he had a great fanaticism for cars, something he inherited from his father, whom he admired and consulted as much as he could. A lover of speed and construction, he never gave up on anything, because he always fought for what he wanted.

His father, Les, had stopped driving a tanker truck to dedicate himself fully to an oil service station that he himself had set up. The anecdote tells that the workers of the place, that the child Bruce was very restless and was always asking for tools to create his first vehicle that would be nothing less than a tricycle, of course he did not do it alone, but the little one was the one who gave the orders .

Life put a tough test on the McLaren family, because their son at the age of 10 suffered a deformity in his hips and had to be hospitalized. But the desire to do things that the New Zealander had meant that after two years he was back in his house, along with his things and of course, he had the support of his father and sisters.

Upon finishing his studies, Bruce entered Seddon Technical Memorial College, where he would begin a course in engineering, his other passion. Inheriting his father’s love of cars made them both spend hours talking about construction and studying different engine parts.

With the driver’s license under his arm and with his first car, he decided it was time to start competing, and he signed up for mountain races, typical of his country. He did so well that he earned the “Pilot to Europe” passport, which was awarded to him by the NZIGP (New Zealand International Grand Prix).

Without hesitation, he left behind his beautiful New Zealand, to make his way in the captivating European continent. Arriving there he was received by none other than Jack Brabham, who was known to his father, and who immediately placed himself under his orders. His debut came in 1958 with an F-2 Cooper-Climax, which ran alongside the F-1, but with less powerful cars. In his first race at the Nürburgring and at the age of 22, he started in 15th position, finishing first in his specialty and fifth overall. Something that of course amazed more than one and a record still in force.

Bruce did not feel very comfortable in the squad, since great pilots like Stirling Moss, Maurice Trintignant and Brabham himself, took away a lot of prominence. For that and other things he decided to create his own cars. Afterwards, he ran a couple more races, but the inevitable split came in 1966.

A year earlier, Bruce had traveled to his country and bought a service station in a suburb of the capital, called Te Atatu, and together with two partners, founded Bruce McLaren Motors. With the help of Englishman Robin Herd, they designed the Mk 2A, a prototype almost intended to compete in the Indinápolis 500. Also with an Oldsmobile 4.5 engine and Firestone tyres, the car was well suited to racing in Formula 1 and was called the Mk 2B. Bruce debuted it at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1966. They were only able to run six races, but the following year just three points left the young team in last place among the constructors.

In 1968 and with Danny Hulme as driver, the team was eleven points away from winning the Manufacturers’ Cup against Lotus that year. The following year he won the Brans Hatch race (no points), however the big break was in North America, taking the Can-Am two-time championship. In 1970 he went all out to win the Indianapolis 500. However, one afternoon while rehearsing at high speed in a McLaren-Chevrolet M6GT, death found him, as a part fell from the vehicle and Bruce crashed into a flag stand, killing him instantly on 2 March. June at the English circuit of Goodwood.

If so much effort, dedication and preparation of McLaren Motors had borne great fruit when Bruce was alive, the achievements were even greater later, since the brand currently has 8 brand titles and 11 drivers. This is what McLaren surely wanted to achieve the day he, together with his partners, created the team. Something that from heaven will want to be an indelible mark in the world of Formula 1.
