He had to work for a time as a bricklayer to earn money and be able to buy a car.
In the first championship he disputed, the Turismo Carretera, he finished in 17th position, but in 1940 he already won the Northern International Grand Prix with a Chevrolet.ย He won many races in Argentina and South America, such as Buenos Aires-Caracas where he had a serious accident and on a tour of Europe, in 1949 he won tests in San Remo, Pau, Perpignan, Marseille and Monza at the wheel of the Ferrari. 125 F2.
His first appearance in Formula 1 was in 1950, he is in second place in the championship behind Giuseppe “Nino” Farina.

Fangio took victory with his Alfa Romeo 158 in Monaco, Belgium and France.ย In 1951 he achieved absolute victory, with the same car, ahead of riders Alberto Ascari, who came second, and Josรฉ Froilรกn Gonzรกlez, third.ย It was enough for him to win the Swiss, French and Spanish grands prix.ย A year later he was the top favorite to repeat the title, he had even signed for the Maserati brand but an untimely accident in Monza before the season officially started took him away from the circuits all year.ย The story of this episode was bizarre.ย One day before competing in Italy he participated in a test in Northern Ireland, he took a plane but got stuck in Paris due to bad weather. Little by little he began to gain a foothold in the legend of motorsports. |
Without thinking about it, he took a car and drove all night until he reached Milan.ย Half asleep he was able to drive his new car that he had never driven before, the Maserati 2000, he voluntarily placed himself in the last position on the starting line and began to overtake opponents until he lost control of his car and crashed into the protectors of the circuit.ย The result was several contractures, trauma, brain injuries and a full year in dry dock.ย Before this misfortune he won a few races in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay etc., driving a Ferrari 125.
On his return to the Formula 1 tracks in 1953 he managed to win the last grand prix of the season, that of Italy, in the same place where the accident had taken place, but in the general classification he only managed to be second behind Alberto Ascari .ย In the following season Fangio got his second title.ย During the first two races, Argentina and Belgium, he still raced with Maserati, where he achieved two wins, but from then on he will be under the command of Mercedes.ย With his new car, a W196 R, he wins in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.ย Little by little he began to gain a foothold in the legend of motorsports.
In 1955 he would repeat the title comfortably, with a seventeen-point advantage over the second.ย He won the grand prix of Argentina, Belgium, Holland and Italy.ย But this season was marked by non-sports news.ย His rival in recent years, Albert Ascari had an accident with his Lancia in Monaco, from which he emerged unharmed, but only four days later he lost his life in car practice.
As if that were not enough, Fangio was present at Pierre Levegh’s spectacular accident at the 24 hours of Le Mans, where he was thrown into the air towards the public engulfed in a ball of fire and causing the death of 80 people and himself.ย A psychosis was created after that episode, some great prizes were suspended and firms such as Lancia, absorbed by Ferrari, and Mercedes, gave up continuing to compete in Formula 1.
In 1956 he made his debut with the Lancia-Ferrari team and could not do it in a better way, taking his fourth championship, the third in a row, beating Stirling Moss.ย That year with his Ferrari D50 he won the tests in Argentina, England and Germany and with another two second places they were enough to prevail over his opponents.
In 1957 he will achieve his fourth consecutive championship, the fifth of his career, and which in the end would be the last.ย He returns to compete with the Maserati firm and wins in Monaco, France and Germany, where he gave a real recital.ย He took a total of fifteen points from Moss, who was getting his third consecutive runner-up.
1958 marked Fangio’s farewell to Formula 1. He only ran two Grand Prix, the one in Argentina, in Buenos Aires, and the one in France, in Reims.ย In both races he was classified fourth but in the French city there was a circumstance worthy of review.ย When Fangio was fourth at the end of the race, the race leader Mike Hawthorn got behind him, who in a truly historic gesture slowed down his car and allowed Fangio to cross the finish line before him so as not to double him. .ย It was a beautiful detail that clearly reflected the prestige and admiration that a runner like Fangio aroused.ย He did not want to drag himself around the circuits and soon retired from Formula 1.
He won his last race in his country, in Buenos Aires, with his Maserati 250F, in the Grand Prix of that city.ย During a career in Cuba he experienced one of the most distressing moments of his life when he was kidnapped by a group opposed to the Argentine dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, the July 26 Movement guerrilla.ย Fangio was held for about a day, about 26 hours, and the strangest thing is that over time he maintained friendly contact with his kidnappers.
In 1969 he competed in the Nurburgring 84 Hours.
On June 17, 1995, the second most successful driver in Formula 1 died, recently surpassed by Michael Schumacher, but the one who was for many the best driver that has ever existed, since he was champion at the age of forty (Formula 1 did not exist before).
His figures are impressive, they are such that of 51 races, 24 finished in 1st position, 10 in 2nd position, 1 in 3rd position and 6 in 4th position, the rest he abandoned (14).
He also got a certain number of first positions on the starting grid:
- 1st position: 29 times.
- 2nd position: 13 times.
- 3rd position: 4 times.
- 4th position: 4 times.
- 8th position: 1 time.
His track record in Formula 1 is enviable because in addition to winning five titles, he got two runner-up finishes in all the full editions he contested.ย He hardly had an adaptation period at the beginning, he got to know Formula 1 while winning titles and at the end of his career he did not want to run more calmly, without the specific desire to compete.ย He was a born winner and loved to drive, as he was known in the motor world he was simply “the master”.
