Two events decisively marked the 1952 season:
The FIA ​​relaxed the regulations regarding engines and on the other hand the great champion Juan Manuel Fangio suffered in Monza in June, the most serious accident of his sports career. After contesting a race in Ireland and flying to Paris, he drove his own car all night to Milan, arriving at the racetrack an hour before the start of the test. Starting at the end of the grid without having played practice and with unthinkable accumulated fatigue, he had an accident on the second lap.
Undoubtedly, this last fact led to the dominance of Alberto Ascari in the biennium 1952-53 translated into 9 consecutive victories without counting the 500 miles of Indianapolis. He was the owner and lord of the tracks and as the leader of Ferrari, he gave the “prancing horse” team its first world title with victories in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Germany, Holland and Italy.
The victory at the Nurburgring before 260,000 Germans was especially exciting when he came back and overtook his teammate Farina’s Ferrari on the last lap.
In fact, the final classification demonstrates the enormous success of the 2-litre, 190 hp Ferrari 500, which also took advantage of Alfa Romeo’s withdrawal from competition before the season began.
One of the revelations of the season was the new John Cooper team that with the young Englishman Mike Hawthorn would bring serious duels with the Italian teams from the middle of the decade.
